I find it odd that moana 2 didn’t get a super early trailer this year, now the live action leaks came out. The Rock is just a giant bildo. Guy thinks he’s amazing, but isn’t a good actor and has too big of an ego, doesn’t need a live action version this soon.

Back to Moana 2,
First red flag: was that we didn’t get a trailer until may. Feel like you get stuff a year in advance especially of how big the first movie was.
Second red flag: Lin Manuel Miranda is not writing the songs, which was the best part of the first movie

3rd and biggest red flag: the movie embargo does not drop until the day of the movie release. This is usually a huge red flag and that studios know it a movie isn’t good and does not want the bad publicity ahead of release. Sometimes it’s a good thing if there is a big twist or reveal so it is not spoiled………. But Moana isn’t that kind of movie

That’s because it was a Disney+ show until Iger needed to stave off a shareholder takeover.

Was this the movie they cobbled together from a D+ series? Or am I thinking of another animated project?

*Yep, it was Moana.

Moana 2 will do well because of the first one, regardless at how good of a movie it is.

A sequel to an incredibly popular animated movie being released over a long holiday weekend where parents will be trapped with their bored kids for multiple days?

This movie is going to make money.

Its tracking for a $125M-$135M Thanksgiving opening and had a record advance day ticket sales.

But I agree, I feel like after word of mouth gets out it won't do that well at the box office.

No LMM, so hopefully the songs will be tolerable and people have Dwayne Johnson fatigue.

not in my house

I was shocked that it is coming out next weekend though, as I haven't seen or heard much about its release

The trend with these movies has been to open big, then tank. The movie theater experience is too damn expensive to sit through garbage.

I think the will be determined by word of mouth and if Disney injected any of their BS into this installment more than anything. The first one was great and if they can recreate that to some extent it will do well in the theater, especially over a holiday weekend.

OP you need to define "dud" beforehand here. Are you talking about critic reviews, audience reviews, box office?

Feels like this movie is going to make so much money.

Biggest loss is Lin Manuel-Miranda. Music will not be as good but movie will be a huge success.

insane to make Moana 2 a Disney+ show.

Makes me think of all the money disney had to have lost with straight to VHS sequels to all the 90s movies.

but theh probably made those for a penny and sold a million units.

the name will make it money, Frozen 2 was no where close to Frozen and it made a billion.

Which movies?

The big studio animated movies from the past 18 months have been opening anywhere from bomb to slightly disappointing to massive and then legging out in theaters to massive profitability. Elemental was an opening week dud that hung around to half a billion. Migration had the same route to $300 million, and was a much more modest production. Despicable Me 4 had an underwhelming opening and got to just under a billion. Inside Out 2 started massive and is still the biggest film of the year.

one thing you can’t put a price on is 2 hours in a dark room
with a occupied child

which is why children’s movies do well.

Define dud.

It may not make $500 million like the first movie, but I could see it going on a similar trajectory as Encanto, which made $100 million.

The only Disney Animation movie to not make money in recent years was Strange World, and that was because of the LGBTQ nonsense in it.

I don't see any world where it financially flops, even if it's absolutely terrible it will make a bunch of money on name brand, just like Frozen 2 did.

It will be a huge hit.

The only Disney movie in at least five years my kids want to see.
