Heading to Jacksonville when LSU baseball plays there (Feb. 20-22). Any recommendations on where to stay? Food? Any areas to avoid.

Thanks

Eh...maybe stay out at the beach.

Otherwise the Omni downtown is decent...but there's not much worth doing down there.

One Ocean is solid, probably top recommendation

There is a Sheraton and Spring Hill Suites in Jax Beach that are good as well

Definitely stay out at the beach. Downtown Jax is pretty barren.

Do you have hotel preference-rewards, Beach area is good along with airport area, plenty of food options around here depending on what you prefer.
I'm in Fernandina area and it's an easy drive to the ball games. Pretty sure I will be there if I can get tickets.

Go to St Augustine at some point if you’ve never been. Drive through Ponte Vedra Beach down A1A and look at the houses.

The Bearded Pig has some of the best BBQ in Florida. Florida is no Texas, Kansas City, Memphis or St Louis for BBQ; but definitely very good. Fun spot; solid eats in a safe part of town.

A short one minute walk from the Pig is Sidecar; IMHO one of the best bourbon bars in Florida.

I would stay in St. Augustine. It's my favorite city in Florida. Yes it's touristy but the architecture is wonderful, especially at Flagler College.

As others have mentioned, Downtown Jacksonville is terrible. It might legitimately be the worst downtown of any city over 1 million people. Very barren, don't even bother with downtown.

The beach areas can be nice but northern Florida in general isn't known for it's beaches. Plus with it being February, the water will be way too cold to even think about getting in.

It'll be a little bit of a commute, but I would stay in St. Augustine and commute in for the games.

St Augustine is a lot of fun.

If “awesome” means OK, then I agree.

It’s old Florida, the setting is OK.

Falling in love is awesome, holding a new grandchild is awesome, Chowder Ted’s is serviceable.

St Augustine is the play here.

Jacksonville is vanilla as to organic cuisine or culture.

Have you decided on where you are staying?

I have the weekend package for all 3 days, will be sitting in section 104 behind the Home Team Dugout.

I might drive up for the Friday/Saturday games. I'm about 3 hours south of there.

Haven't finalized anything yet but more than likely will stay in St. Augustine.

I’d normally recommend staying at The Ponte Vedra Club but it’s undergoing major renovations and it’s subsequently not the greatest time to stay there.

I am glad I found this thread. We are coming in for the games and was getting ready to book a hotel downtown. Now I'm second guessing it.

Is downtown really that bad? Worth the 30 minute drive to stay on the beach?

I was going to say the same. One of my best friends lives right down the boulevard from the club and sawgrass. He's on the "dry" side but what a nice place to live. I was like WTF when he bought basically a teardown in 2016 but he's gonna make a killing on that place one day. He kept like one wall for tax purposes and then went crazy on the house LOL.
