Take away the fact that he is terrible at what he does, but if you look at the players sandwiched around him when we picked him, it makes our selection of him sooooo much worse.

- Trade happy Saints allow the Vikings to pick Justin Jefferson at 22 when we have the 24th pick.
- San Fransciso takes Brandon Aiyuk at 25
- Green Bay takes Jordan Love at 26

- Early second round picks that we could have possibly traded out of the first to are Tee Higgins, Michael Pittman, Xavier McKinney, Robert Hunt and Jonathan Taylor.

Taking any of them would have us in such a better position today.

If there were ever a lost season, it's this one. Why not just for the hell of it, switch Ruiz and McCoy for 5-6 games and see what happens?

Didn’t Sean love Jonathan Taylor too? Feel like I remember hearing that we really wanted him. Should have just taken him at 24

Imagine taking Love at 24 and letting him sit behind Brees for 2 years. Gotta think Payton can do something with Love instead of relying on Winston and cast-offs his last season here.

Should have been a year we drafted a QB. Outside of Jordan Love, Jalen Hurts (albeit I'm sure this would have pissed off Saints fans at the time and is a hindsight pick) was drafted in the 2nd round. Tee Higgins and Jonathan Taylor were also available.

Instead, we drafted a guy at Center in the first round after taking a Center the year before.

When I like to dwell over "draft pick what-ifs", I usually look at similar positions because without knowing how they ranked certain players on their board, you at least know they were looking at that spot. Looking at how the draft fell, that would put Isaiah Wilson (29th), or Robert Hunt (39th) as possibilities.

And considering our draft success and the fact that Wilson was a 1st round draft picked, played in 1 game before being traded and eventually out of the league; I suspect that was their next choice

All people hate everyone too much. Stop hating people over a game.

The 2017 draft saved the end of the Brees era but the 2018-2022 drafts destroyed all hope for the post-brees era.

2018:
Davenport
TreQuan
Rick Leonard
Natrell Jamerson
Boston Scott
Kamrin Moore
WIll Clapp

2019:
McCoy
CJGJ
Saquan Hampton
Kaden Elliss
Alize Mack

2020:
Cesar Ruiz
Adam Trautman
Zack Baun
Tommy Stevens

2021:
Payton Turner
Pete Werner
Adebo
Ian Book
Landon Young
Kawaan Baker

2022:
Olave
Penning
Alontae
D'Marco Jackson
Jordan Jackson

McCoy, Olave, and CJGJ were the only ones who really did anything worth a damn and Baun was probably the best player we drafted over this span but Allen didn't know how to use him. That is a shitload of players who had no impact or negative impact on us.

This one pisses me off the most b/c I said numerous times I wanted us to draft him.

Going off memory, most of the board wanted Queen or the Oklahoma linebacker in the draft threads. Queen actually turned out good. Much better than Ruiz. Tee Higgins woukd have been a solid pick also. Woukd have saved us from moving up for Olave putting us in this spiral.

I think you devalued a few but still doesn't change the point of your thread. The draft is a crap shot, but to miss at the levels this team has missed is crippling. One of the arguments to determine if a draft is a good draft, is if a player makes it to their 2nd contract. I am not about to spend the time figuring that out, but I did look at the 2017 - 2020 drafts to see who is still in the league, per pro football reference.

1st round picks still under contract
2017: 59.4%
2018: 68.8%
2019: 75.0%
2020: 62.5%
2021: 75.0%

Average - 68.1%
During that same time frame, the Saints had 5 first rounders. The only one out of the league now is Ram. Somehow Turner, Ruiz & Davenport are still hanging around. Ruiz is the only 1 still on the team - 20% hit rate

All rounds:
2017: 27.7%
2018: 35.9%
2019: 36.2%
2020: 43.1%
2021: 49.4%

Average - 38.5%
They had 29 total draft picks, 12 players currently not under contract (41.4%), but more importantly 12 of the 17 currently under contract play for different teams. The 5 "successful" picks are Werner, Young, Ruiz, McCoy, & AK. - 17% hit rate that include a backup (Young) and a player everyone wants to run out of town (Ruiz)

2021: Payton Turner Pete Werner Adebo Ian Book Landon Young Kawaan Baker

2022: Olave Penning Alontae D'Marco Jackson Jordan Jackson

God this list is depressing. I mean just completely disgusting. And we traded up for a lot of those players too.

Baun was probably the best player we drafted over this span

It's crazy when I was surfing through the NFL YouTube channel and belatedly saw Zack Baun was voted #26 on the NFL's Top 100 Players of 2025 by his peers. He was either playing special teams, backup rotations or was injured for the 4 years he was here.

(I’m not big on hating players you could check my post history).

But there is no way to hate Caesar Ruiz enough.

Of all the Saints terrible picks. Ruiz in 2020 was the worse of all.

In addition to all the amazing talent we could have drafted first round instead, Louisiana had also just produced its best center in decades.

Instead of drafting Lloyd Cushenberry in the 3rd and having a lock down center for years, we waste a 1st round pick for a suckwad. Sean Payton then trades Cushenberry from Denver, probably because he was a constant reminder of that terrible draft decision.

Either Denver’s FO does not give Sean much say in drafting or Loomis gave Sean no say in drafting because the Broncos have drafted wayyyy better than we have recently. Also I feel like they haven’t had as many weird arse random players drafted like we always (and still) seem to.

Yeah, this whole "everybody on the same page" is hog wash.

Again, I go back to the Kelvin Banks pick this year. No high fiving no handshakes in the war room when they panned in with the camera.

And not saying Banks won't be good or insinuating he won't be but the reaction in the room suggested to me that there were different takes and that maybe not everyone was on board. Just looked stale.

Some friction in there if you will.
