President Donald Trump said Friday he may impose tariffs on countries “if they don’t go along with Greenland.”

“We need Greenland for national security. So I may do that,” Trump said at the White House.

The comments show Trump, whose push to acquire Greenland for the U.S. has grown increasingly aggressive in recent months, turning to one of his favorite tools for leveraging power over foreign nations.

The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for additional information on Trump’s remarks.

The Trump administration has previously said it is weighing multiple options, including utilizing the U.S. military, in order to take over the Danish territory.

Trump asserts it is essential that America own Greenland — even though the U.S. already maintains a military base there — because of national security concerns posed by China and Russia.

The White House has also said the U.S. is considering making an offer to buy the Arctic island. But Greenland and Denmark have repeatedly insisted that the territory is not for sale and has no wish to be absorbed into America.

Trump’s suggestion that he may wield tariffs to get his way on Greenland came after he described a similar strategy to force foreign countries to raise their drug prices.

Trump has pushed to lower the cost of U.S. drugs by mandating that domestic prices match lower ones paid overseas.

At the White House event Friday, Trump said he threatened the leaders of multiple countries to either raise drug prices as part of a “most favored nations” deal, or else face heavy tariffs on all their imports to the U.S.

“I may do that for Greenland too. I may put a tariff on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security,” Trump said.

Yeah but, NATO sent 34 frenchies to flex their muscle to Greenland. However, can we stand up to such strength....

I don't understand why he doesn't just negotiate some sort of massive access and defense agreement with them. I'm all Trump, but taking it as our own territory is kind of stupid.

POTUS Trump is not even worried about the SCOTUS tariff decision.

They are legionaries. Trump had better be careful. Supposedly those are some tough hombres.

In addition to this, he needs to incentivize/leverage the citizens of Greenland.

I’m thankful he thinks like a colonizer. Colonization was the biggest net win in world history. It made savages into civilized people.

Venezuela should be a state in Greenland needs to be a state by the end of his term. Add Columbia in there too.

I’m not sure giving 80+ seats in the House to two Latin American countries is the solution.

And Greenland has a population the size of Vermillion Parish. Not exactly viable either.

Just like we already have access to their natural resources if "we" actually want them.

We already have as much defense access as we want though a 1951 treaty.

As for commercial access, I think the only difference if we owned Greenland would be less restrictive environmental regulations.

Perhaps this is his way of negotiating…

Maybe projecting strength, almost to a point of bullying, is Trumps way to get people to bend to his will…

I don’t hate it either way. Bully away.

I think Trump must know something about Greenland so I trust his motives.

If he is saying national security, then he's not just being stupid and saying dumb shite.

The US has had a military post there for a very long time. Just like those in outer regions of Alaska, I believe they serve a much needed military purpose.

He needs to use something other than IEEPA to justify bypassing Congress for the tariffs.

Only one country has a say about Greenland, that's Denmark. What does "support" or "opposition" mean accept armed conflict...in which case tariffs are moot.

because international agreements and leases only work until the owner says they’ve had enough. just look at Venezuela and the oil companies. ownership is the only thing that guarantees access. who knows if we’ll even be close allies with Europe in 25 years? the way things are trending, I don’t want to rely on Europe for anything.

don’t be so naive to how the world works.

This is not as complex as you might think.

We need to leave Greenland be.
