Concerts: Openers Who Were Better Than Or Upstaged The Headliner

When reading a Neil Sedaka obit I read he and Elton John had a falling out after EJ had helped revive his career.
AI helped me dig down on it and it seems Elton had arranged for Sedaka to open for The Carpenters in 1975 and Sedaka was consistently getting better reviews while breaking certain opening act protocols, so Richard Carpenter fired him off the tour.
What are other instances of openers being better, upstaging, or getting sabotaged by the headliner?

Pantera opening for Metallica and AC/DC at the legendary Monsters of Rock festival in Moscow on September 28, 1991. They fricking crushed it. Watch the interviews. They didn't know what they doing at the time.

James Brown upstaging the Rolling Stones is pretty famous. Open Culter. Not sure that would count as it sounds like more of a festival with JB right before RS. That's the most famous one i have heard about. I saw Ted Nugent open for Judas Priest and X open for Squeeze. While the headliner was great in both cases, those were probably my favorite openers i have seen.

I saw the Scorpions open up for Ted Nugent when The Zoo came out and they may have been better.

I saw Eddy Money, Thin Lizzy and Bad Company in about 1979.
Eddy Money was great, but Thin Lizzy was incredible. Bad Company had to wait till things died down before they could come out.
Bad Company put on a great show, but I think anyone who was there at that show remembered Thin Lizzy more.

Saw Bon Jovi open for Ratt in 1985. I'm no massive Bon Jovi fan but we know how that turned out.
More recently saw Judas Priest play before Deep Purple on a co-headlining tour. Older Deep Purple shouldn't have played new songs in 4 out of the first 5 tunes. People were heading for the exits.

Those little teeny boppers that were waiting for the Monkees didn’t know what hit them.

Def Leppard opening for Billy Squier in early 1983.
Alice in Chains opening for Van Halen in 1991.

one of the more infamous cases was little feat at their Lowell George peak opening for the Doobie Brothers in 1975. Little Feat got the crowd so amped up during their set they kept chanting “FEAT” during the Doobies set.
One that I did see was when the eagles reunited after 20 years, in New Orleans. The opener was Melissa Etheridge who none of us had ever heard of and she came out first and lit the place on fire. The eagles show was decent but she was the star of the evening

Went to see an unknown band named Styx open for Wishbone Ash at the Warehouse in 1975.
I can’t confirm that Styx stole the show because I was unconscious by the time Wishbone Ash hit the stage

can you elaborate on this? Genuinely curious.

They are referring to Skynard walking out onto the Stones “tongue logo” ramp area. They had already told them not to walk out onto it & that it was only for the Stones who were headlining to use.

Mothers Finest was known for that. I saw them open for Atlanta Rhythm Section in 1980 and they ran circles around them.
Another one I saw was Saga open for Billy Squire in the early 80's and Saga was much better

I saw Dave Matthews Band open for Blues Traveler, 1995 or 1996.
I was there to see Blues Traveler. It may have been that I was surprised how good they were, having barely heard of them. But they were awesome

Saga opening fire Billy Squire Monroe Civic Center.
Third song in everyone was booing him and yelling "bring back Saga!"

I saw that show in Memphis and totally agree.
Another was AC/DC in '77 opening for KISS. I didn't know who they were and they blew KISS off the stage. Bon Scott, then this crazy dude in the school uniform shredding....unbelieveable.
