Well really the first time I’ve ever tried smoking beef shanks. My wife loves to use these for soup but I have been eyeballing them and thinking how they would turn out on the smoker.

I must say they turned out really good after 6 hours on the Searwood at 225. The last hour or so was wrapped to finish them off

Raw unseasoned

My Searwood. Love this smoker

Seasoned and one hour in

3 hours in

Pulled and rested

I punched the smoked marrow out and gave the bones to my dogs. You would have thought they hit the lottery.

Shanks look great.

I was once told by a vet to never give cooked bones to the dog. Apparently they splinter when chewing and can cause major issues and even death. Take it or leave it, my pork shoulder bones go in the trash now.

shite I thought you meant to save those for stock. Them bones would have ended up as liquid flavor at my house. Doggie would have gotten to eat any gristle though.

Does look tasty.

damn those look awesome.

Any issues with the Searwood? I have the Smokefire and it's been nothing but trouble. I've heard they corrected their mistakes with the SW.

Looks good. I bought a Searwood last fall and am enjoying it.

Check out Smokin' Pecan pellets. They are made from pecan shells (not wood) in Mansfield LA.

Many of the YouTubers pimp them, so I gave them a try and really think they give a good flavor, a little smokier than wood pellets but still fairly light. I don't really notice much difference between the other wood pellets I've tried.

The Smokin' Pecan pellets are not cheap, but my Searwood just sips them on low and slow. If I crank it to 400 or so for a wing cook or the like, I tend to use cheaper wood pellets because consumption goes way up, and I'm not looking for smoke flavor as much on those cooks.

I've bought the Smokin' Pecan pellets at Tubbs Hardware in Bossier (not known for cheap prices) for less than they are straight from the manufacturer. I guess the lack of shipping makes that possible.

Definitely true with chicken. Never heard that about a beef bone like this. I have given many a dog cooked rib bones and never had an issue.

No issues so far. It’s been the perfect little smoked. Love the PID control loop and the app with the trend lines that are really accurate I would say. I can open the lid on the smoker and close the lid real fast, then check the trend line for temp and see where it dipped about 15 degrees and picked right back up.

Cool little smoker

Beef shanks are good substitute for veal shanks to make Oso Bucco

Beef bones on grills/smokers can splinter and/or break dogs teeth. Pork rib bones can give dogs the shits as well.
