Is The Passion of the Christ one of the most violent films to have come out this century?

The film is 22 years old now.
Since its release, I have yet to see a major motion picture that depicts the murder of someone in such a brutal, realistic, and visceral way.
I love the film and it’s one of my all time favorites, but looking back on the controversy it got, I can see why it got so many headlines.
From the perspective of someone who isn’t a Christian, it could easily be seen as a 2 hour snuff film devoted to depicting someone being tortured to death. The scourging, Jesus falling and the cross crushing his head, the Roman dislocating his shoulder to get his hand aligned with the mark on the cross, etc.
I honestly don’t think there’s a major motion picture with a mid to large size budget to have come out in the last 15-20 years that matches the violence of this film. Maybe Hostel or A Serbian Film? Even those movies had tiny budgets and you could clearly tell they had their limitations when it came to depicting certain things. Maybe the SAW movies but even those films had nowhere near the success that this movie had

No. Not even remotely close. Tons of horror movies far more graphic.
It is graphic because it is Christ being tortured and killed. For Christians that makes it more uncomfortable to watch than other horror movies which are far more graphic.

And the controversy was bullshite. The whole point of the movie was to really sell the agony aspect and the sacrifice Christ made for humanity. It was pointless to sugar coat it.

Disclaimer: I am not antisemetic or anti-Israel.
I think that the controversy at the time was that it depicted the Jews killing Jesus and didn’t put the onus solely on Romans. Obviously Mel Gibson’s drunken tirade since then justified that a little bit.
Jews in Hollywood didn’t like that. I do not in any way whatsoever put Jesus’ crucifixion on modern day Jews in Hollywood, but it was an attempt of a huge whitewashing of History.

It’s not the fact that it’s “graphic”. It’s because it’s super realistic and visceral compared to horror movies. It’s like if you went back to the first-century and filmed a documentary-style movie of someone getting tortured and killed by Roman-style brutality methods.

It feels extra graphic because it's presented in a realistic way.
There are horror movies that are more gory but they are often time cartoonishly so. It's less uncomfortable because your brain knows how fake it is
Passion of the Christ made people extremely uncomfortable because the violence was meant to be realistic.

I am glad Gibson did not sanitize the scourging and crucifixion. Both were hyperviolent and designed to destroy a human body.
I am not a theologian, but I have always put the responsibility for Jesus' death squarely on the Jewish Sanhedrin. Caiaphas used the Romans as his tool for execution, but it was the Jewish leadership who paid Judas his thirty pieces of silver.

It was a hard watch, that's for sure.
The bad thing is that it might not've been gory enough to reflect actual events.

This isn't controversial. The Jews killed Jesus. The Romans are the instrument they used to do so.

Correct because Jews run Hollywood and they want to deny facts. Read the Bible. They killed Jesus. Pilot said he could find no fault in him and washed his hands of his death. He gave the mob what they wanted.

Remember this the next time someone blames Hollywood and video games for violence in our society.
No one blames Pontius Pilate regardless of how many times the story is told or how often it is depicted.

Of course Jews today didnt kill Jesus
But Pilate offered to spare Jesus. A crowd of angry Jews (pushed by rabbis) told Pilate to crucify him.
Now Pilate was essentially a king and could have done whatever he wanted so, of course, he still holds ultimate blame.
