quote:

American History X & Blow screenwriter David McKenna responds to a question about who is keeping him from making the movies he wants to make:

"I just think that the industry is broke. I think that nobody has been going to movies because everything is so political now. And every time these actors open their mouths, which is once every two or three weeks, they set us back a frickin' year.

Like I said earlier, I don't have a problem with these people and their politics, but when they say it aloud and they go off ala DeNiro and Springsteen, they're killing us. They're killing the dude in Van Nuys who's trying to freaking have a family and who's a freaking grip on a set.

They're not thinking about those people because they've got their millions. We've just got to be quiet and win back half the country and half the world. And that's my biggest sort of general overview of the whole thing.

It's just every time somebody opens their mouths, and nobody gives a [expletive] about their opinion. And we just got to stop with it. We've got to stay out of politics. We've got to make movies.

'Cause we're screwing all the young people. The young people can't find work."

Which is what makes Project Hail Mary and absolute must see. It was like going back in time as far as a movie goes.

Every time non-acting musician Bruce Springsteen says something political, a studio refuses to fund a movie?

Actors should shut up about politics? Cool. Actors talking is the reason you can't get a movie made? GTFO.

They've always been left wing mouthpieces.

The problem is horrible writing and lame woke "reimagining" of existing properties.

Where did he specifically say that every time Bruce Springsteen opens his mouth, a studio hits the self-destruct button on a film? That's the strawman you ran to because the real point went over your head.

But I'll explain it to you like you're AOC: the point is repeated political grandstanding from celebrities every year alienates a massive chunk of the audience. And when you're in a business that depends on mass appeal, that matters whether you like it or not.

If that doesn't click, just imagine Robert DeQueero saying "frick Cumala" at an awards ceremony, Mark Ruffalo publicly endorsing ICE, Julianne Moore calling George Floyd a "deadbeat, pregnant woman robbing meth head" or Aaron Paul claiming "blackness has ruined America."

That is not what he said

And also let's not pretend that Bruce isn't part of the celebrity class

Only old people still see him as a musician, like John Mellencamp, or Neil Young.

They are lumped in with all other generic celebrities that pop up every now and then to bitch about the right, or to bitch about people bitching about the left.

That is why they are mentioned.

Hope this helps.

At this point I think you're just harvesting down votes for fun. You can't be this stupid.

Decent movie, but let’s face it. It’s a kid’s cast away movie. Could’ve easily been a cartoon. We need more TOP GUN Maverick types. That’s a great movie.

A lot of this falls on studios mandating diversity requirements in writer’s rooms. Writers are as much to blame as actors. They aren’t public with their politics, but they wedge it into TV shows.

Which is why we went to the theater to see it this past week. I’m voting with my dollars to say “We want risk-taking, original material.”

Brilliant analysis. Maverick also could have been a cartoon if we’re playing the “Name a movie that could be a cartoon” game.

It was a good story but my god, the digital camera shots were just awful to watch. It’s a huge problem with 95% of Hollywood films that come out now.

Digital shooting makes movies look like insurance commercials now. The lighting is so bright that there’s no shadows behind characters at all. They don’t have the rich, thick, and grainy backgrounds that 35 mm movies had. 35 mm film shots look like paintings.

Digital just makes movies unwatchable now and I’m fricking sick of it.

Hollywood talking is why I might watch One Battle After Another, while looking at my phone on Max instead of seeing it in theaters.

Hollywood being chill and shutting up is why I went and saw Mercy, Ready or Not 2, and Project Hail Mary in theaters.

None of those are a better film than One Battle but I just have no interest in diverting 2.5 hours of my time to it for $30.

Yes. I was fine with these folks but then they want to throw their politics everywhere and yes, it leaves a bad taste and I see a movie with them in it and I’m just, frick this dude. Screenwriter in the OP gets it. You’re to stupid to get it.
