Got a little grief from my sales boss today for putting in PTO for a 5-day trip to Montreal in July.

(4th of July week)

Kinda threw me off because it’s not like I’m constantly out. I take maybe one real trip a year, if that. Rest of the time I’m at work or just keeping things low key. Haven’t been anywhere new in a while, so I figured I’d finally use some of the PTO I’ve been stacking.

Montreal just seemed like an easy choice. Never been, not crazy expensive, good food, walkable city, something different without being a whole production.

Boss hit me with the “that’s a lot of time” line, which I didn’t really know how to take. It’s five days… not like I’m asking for a month off.

Add another day on each end, just because.

It’s not a lot of time. Is it your busy time? If not, start looking for a new job, seriously. Time off for jobs that don’t have a busy season or major project going on when you need off, should not be an issue at all.

Maybe your boss was having a bad day?

Don’t ever feel guilty for taking time off you earned

Enjoy your life

Time to start looking elsewhere if that’s the reaction.

coming from someone who is the one who approves vacations/PTO at my company, you should have respectfully asked him what an appropriate amount of days for a vacation would be.

Anything less than 4-5 days isn’t a vacation in my book.

You are going to come back from Montreal smelling like curry and spoiled goats milk. You may even develop an urge to operate an icee machine.

Those "vacation days" aren't there to actually use, silly.

I would immediately start looking for a new job if that is how my company treated PTO

My company changed our PTO carry over rules, so pretty much everyone has 20+ days to burn, some are over 40 days to burn this year.

I have to burn 30+, we still catch shite for taking time off when it's due to dumb company rules.

You should've asked for a raise seeing as they can't live without you for 5 days.

I just retired from a 30-year career. In the very last days someone showed me a document that said I had lost a total of 10.5 months of PTO over my career due to not taking it. This is one of my very few regrets.

You are bound to work for shitty companies by refusing to move out of Louisiana. People deal with shite like that because they need to visit their cousin every few weeks.

Meanwhile, early in my career in Houston, I sent a work email while on vacation for over a week in Honduras, and the partner told me he'd knock my performance grade down a level if I responded to another email while I was out.

I don't even want to know how many times you respond to Teams messages and emails at games, on weekends, etc., that don't require it. You aren't launching airstrikes.
