How do y'all rate Tim Curry as an actor?

He's one of those guys that's well known, but somehow slips through the cracks when discussing good/great actors.

One of the greatest character and theater actors of all time. He’s a relic of a bygone era of actors and actresses who genuinely loved theater and had to work their way up from acting in playhouses to the big screen.
And no disrespect to Bill Skaarsgard, but his performance doesn’t hold a candle to how good Curry was as Pennywise. Not even close.

ETA: Shoutout to the greatest nature documentary filmmaker of his time, Nigel Thornberry

I guess I just think about the roles he has played and consider how well he did in them compared to other actors

You take him out of clue and despite its cast for the time, it's completely forgettable. That guy put on a clinic in that movie. Could do comedy, intensity, both... hell, he even put on one of the most crazy costumes ever in a movie (Legend) and sold it so hard you actually believed it. Total legend.

Excellent, of course.

He’s still alive. In bad shape, but still with us.

Fairly respectable range, obviously nailed things like Rocky Horror and Clue. His roles in Legend and The Three Musketeers are sometimes forgotten by folks. Also shows up unexpectedly in Hunt for Red October (as the doctor), Annie, etc.
He is the definitive Pennywise and Frank N. Furter. I saw him in Spamalot on Broadway and he was really in his element there (for those of you who have only seen him in films, he is an A+ grade stage actor). His health problems have probably robbed us of half dozen great roles over the last decade and a half.
For a guy who was primarily a comedy actor on the screen, he had impressive chops as a serious villain. His frantic energy, ability to do voices, etc., almost carve him out as an English version of Robin Williams mixed with the knighted RSC types.

A stroke really fricked him up good.
He's one of the all time best. Generational talent.

Was the original choice to voice the Joker in the Batman Animated Series and even recorded some before Mark Hamill took over. He also played Mozart in Amadeus on Broadway before the movie version.
Immense talent.

Red October was a clinic on how to get the most out of your supporting characters. Tim Curry was contained just enough to keep his comedic talent from overtaking the role, Courtney B. Vance had his breakout measured performance, and Richard Jordan killed it, making his few minutes some of the most enjoyable portions of the film.

One of the greatest compliments I think anyone can give a character actor is that anytime they show up unexpectedly on screen, people smile and say "Oooh! I didn't know so-and-so was in this !". Curry is absolutely one of those actors. He is a hugely entertaining performer. No other actor could have portrayed Darkness half so well.

He's got the menacing gay man vibe down pat.

His drawn out reenactment of "what happened" in Clue is still my favorite Tim Curry moment ever. Absolute brilliance!

Anyone remembers his episode of Tales from the Crypt where Tim Curry plays an entire redneck family hell ent on torturing Ed Bagley Jr? Episode called Death of Some Salesman
