I was having similar feelings a while back so I stopped playing Warzone, Rocket League, etc. and started focusing on back log and games I missed out on and it's been wonderful. I was always terrible about not finishing so I don't move on to the next game until I finish the whole story or 100% all trophies. Since April of 2024 I've knocked the following:
Witcher 3 (3rd replay but wanted to finally do it all)
Arkham Knight
Doom 2016
Doom Eternal (current)
Ghost of Tsushima
Days Gone
Spider-man 2
God of War Valhalla DLC
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
Next up either Mass Effect Trilogy or Harry Potter Legacy

I can't speak for anyone else, but there are more games released every year that I want to play than I'm capable of playing, such that my already incredible backlog of great games to play gets ever longer.
There are so many good games I'm having to make a legitimate effort to clear the backlog before Battlefield comes out.
About to finish Cyberpunk, still have to finish RDR2, still haven't played Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, on top of still wanting to play the Horizon games.
I think it's just more apparent that most of the big franchises of the past aren't worth it anymore. It's stuff like Hollow Knight Silksong that are killing it nowadays

AAA gaming for the most part has gone to shite yea. The AA and indie scene is where the bulk of the best games coming out now are. Space Marine 2 and Expedition 33 are both fantastic and new indie games like Abyssus and Jump Space are getting rave reviews for being a lot of fun at very low prices relative to big AAA releases and Nintendo games.

the simple solution to this is to wait and buy the game at a discount after it has been polished. I do this pretty regularly now and am more than happy with "modern gaming"
This is exactly what I do now. There are just too many services now like Gamepass and whatever the PlayStation membership is called. Paying just for those two memberships has been saving me a ton of money.
I also agree with a poster above mentioning that maybe the OP should be looking at the 2d platformers. Shovel Knight, hollow knight, and the messenger.

I average buying one game that's not on significant discount about every two or three years. And I still have hundreds I haven't played at all. I'm not on the multiplayer bandwagon, though.

If you are a Potter fan, Legacy is great for the first 66% of the game then when you think you are almost done, a huge area opens up with the same amount of busy work. First 66% of the game I rated it a 9 for the fun of running around Hogwarts and the combat is fun. The last section drops it to a 7 for me.

There has not been a Witcher 2/3, Tom Raider,HZSD, Mass Effect, or Metro epic games in a few years, at least for my play style. I have purchased maybe 3 games in the last two years and they were disappointments.

If you haven’t played Cyberpunk in its final form, you should give it a go.

I am a little unqualified to talk about modern vs past because in my PS3/PS4 days, I only played COD and Madden, with RDR splashed in between.
However, with my PS5 came Ghost of Tsushima, and now, with my PC, I have ventured in to Witcher 3, Spider-man games, The Horizon series, a few Assassins Creed games (don't ask which ones, you won't like my answer) and quite a few games that i really enjoyed. So my experience with modern gaming has been overwhelmingly positive.
I also have a confession. I purchased and downloaded Expedition 33 a few weeks ago and haven't started it. Am I an dumbass? Honest answers only.

Nah. Wait until u actually have time to start it. Nothing worse than starting a game then having to take a break. Im somewhere in act 2 and am gonna have to restart when i pick it back up

I'm about 2/3 the way through several major games and am regretting that life choice...

I've heard this about it or something similar. I actually bought it for my daughter and she played for a while but I think it was too much for her. I have it so I thought I'd do a play through but thanks for the heads up. I'm still in the middle of Doom Eternal and I may finish that around the time Battlefield 6 drops so, depending on how that looks, I might have to get it.

I don’t really like any non Nintendo first party games at this point. Enjoy playing them with my kids.

It’s not a great game, but it’s a very fun game. Just don’t burn yourself out trying to 100% it and you’ll be fine.

To me the thing that turns me off to modern triple A gaming is that so many of the games just feel exhausting.
Games are simply too big, too bloated, trying to do too much, and too much focus on everything in the universe besides game play, etc.
Not every game needs a grand story line and voice acting, insanely detailed textures and lighting effects, extremely realistic motion capturing, 5 hours of cutscenes. It doesn't need to take 60+ hours to beat.
A large, grand spectacle game every now and then is fine, think like a Red Dead Redemption 2 or a God of War 2018. Problem is every triple A game thinks they are the biggest, more important thing in the universe and simply try to do too much.
I think that's why a game like Astrobot was so well received. It hearkened back to the days of when video games were just video games.
Sometimes you just wanna zone out and shoot things or jump around.

Harry Potter is a prime example or this, finish the main story and a TON of boring side quests.

Kind of. I think Harry Potter is more of an example of a game that tried to do a lot and ran out of time. As an example, in the code, there are the bones of an elaborate persuasion/faction system that would have vastly deepened the game if implemented well. Instead, no one cares if you straight up murder dudes with the killing curse. I don’t think HP tried to be too much; I think it tried to be too much on the timeline it was given, and it shows.

This was my issue. I've played for a little over 40 hours, PlayStation says I'm at 75% completion, and I just have no desire to finish the main story even though I really enjoyed it at first. I'm sure one day I'll fire it back up just to finish Sebastian's quests and the main story, but there are just too many other games I want to play.

As long as that continues, wouldn't it be unreasonable of me to say I'm "sick of modern gaming" when "modern gaming" is still putting out more games that I want to play than I'm capable of playing? So what if it's also putting out dozens or hundreds of games that I have no interest in playing? That doesn't inconvenience me in any way, and I don't see why I would be put off or upset about it.
I am capable of playing a lot more than 2-3 games a year.

I'm envious. Which 2025 releases have you played thus far? Which are the "major releases" you're avoiding? Here's a bit of an extensive cheat sheet to help jar your memory, if you need:
