The sad thing is that $299 in 1995 USD is worth about $618 today.
That's true if you pop it into an inflation calendar but it still doesn't feel true to me for some reason.
I remember as a kid thinking a brand new SNES at $200 was a good deal even though $200 was a tidy sum for a 10 year old.
PS3 and PS5 are the only consoles that ever gave me sticker shock with their launch price.
Well, them and the Virtual Boy, which I thankfully rented from a Blockbuster first. I had the money ready to go, talk about bullet dodged.
PS5 has to be the only console in history that has gotten more expensive as its aged.
Doesn't seem to be hurting sales but considering the price and the dearth of games I just don't get it.

Disc drive back in stock at Amazon and in my cart it says "2K+ bought in the past month"
So what are the chances the stock of actual PS5 Pros is pretty low, they sell out instantly, and all these people that bought disc drives will have nothing to use them with?

Sony confirms PS5 Pro ray-tracing comes from AMD's next-gen RDNA 4 Radeon hardware
When was the last time a console got new features before their desktop GPU counterparts? Very cool to see though, the Pro really is quite the upgrade with some serious new tech behind it.
quote:
Sony has confirmed that the GPU features 67% more Compute Units, faster memory, up to 45% improved performance, and two to three times the ray-tracing or RT performance. That last bit will be a proper generational upgrade compared to the RDNA 2.5 or the 'almost RDNA 3 hardware' inside the baseline PS5 console.
How Sony achieved this is pretty simple: the RT hardware inside the PlayStation 5 Pro comes from AMD's next-generation Radeon graphics hardware, or RDNA 4. This has been confirmed by Mark Cerny, Sony's lead PlayStation system architect.
"PS5 Pro uses the new advanced [ray tracing] feature sets that AMD created as the next step in their roadmap architecture," Mark Cerny told CNET. "But if you look around, there are no other AMD GPUs that use it yet.

I'm pretty out of the loop but when do people speculate the PS6 release? Is this just going to be a system where they test this new tech? Hate to compare systems but I'm wondering if it's the WiiU and then 5 years later switch comes out. WiiU almost seemed like a prototype.

PS5 was what 3 or 4 years after the Pro but probably that.
Covid killed development this gen so it will likely stretch it.

Though I suppose we're gonna have to rely on devs to actually implement this.
This is my question.
I’ve got a couple 4k TVs and the networks refuse to broadcast most content at that level even in an era of fiber optic ISPs.
But looking at what people are doing with mods to cyberpunk2077 is frankly shocking. If you haven’t seen it search cyberpunk 2077 with mods on YouTube.
Comparing the modded output with high end computer platforms to what you’d see on Xbox is like comparing 720p to 4k.

When you look at that rendering it really makes me wonder how it impacts gameplay moving forward from a psychological perspective?
Picture that level of graphics with the Witcher 3.
What happens when instead of fighting what amounts to a well rendered cartoon character you're hacking a super real looking human to death with a giant axe while their limbs fly off?
Or a FPS where you're storming Omaha Beach and the guy who looks like a an actual video recording of a soldier who could've been your great grandfather explodes with intestines flying and blood splattering all over you?
I guess what I'm getting at is as we approach near virtual reality levels of video game graphics, do the things we thought were fun with earlier generations of games become less fun when they seem legitimately real?
The flip side of course being sports games where it would feel like you're taking a snap at Lambeau Field in the snow, racing sims that feel like you're actually behind the wheel or with adult content which might end up as an actual sex simulator.

Are you not aware of a current in development game called "Uncrecord"?

I think we’ve already been there for a while. Games with extremely graphic violence either lean more towards cartoony art styles (Borderlands 1) or have non human enemies (aliens, zombies, etc). Now, something like storming Normandy beach I think would actually be a powerful use of the technology. But I think, say, a hyper realistic GTA wouldn’t be received well by the general public. And, frankly, might get smacked with an AO rating.

I’ve seen that clip. It’s pretty intense.
I’m just asking whether that’s what we really want.
Ultimately video games are currently detached from reality enough to be a form of release and not processed as real.
Unrecord and other future games with that level of reality and immersion are simulated reality.
When you’re simulating graphic and brutal murder and it looks real rather than just mashing buttons in a cartoonish world where “that obviously fake character killed that obviously fake character” I just question whether that’s going to be fun or healthy mentally especially if it’s merged with a VR headset.

Personally, I don't. I like that fact that I know I'm playing a video game.
I like being brought into a world that doesn't or no longer exists. A story that when I'm done, I'm kinda sad that I finished. I no way do I want it to "feel" real.

Personally I think it’ll depend on the genre, the characters and the plot.
Take RDR2 for example. Imagine a reality level graphics engine with VR for that game.
You’re seeing the sun rise over the Rockies. That’s incredible.
You’re intensely arguing with Dutch about the future of the gang. That’s powerful.
What happens when you’re riding through Valentine shooting police and watching them bleed out in 4k as part of a required mission? I’m not down with that anymore.
And while I’m very much pro speech, I’m not excited about having 12 year olds shooting down police or bystanders in VR 4k either.

Nah. Mainline consoles will always be heavily subsidized and cheaper. This is a premium console that they will actually make money on
