Anytime I've been paired up with someone it is 9/10 times a dude with good stories, funny, etc.

Most golfers are chill people.

About 15 years ago, I went for late afternoon summer after work walk on round at Pebble Creek in Tampa. I go in the clubhouse to check and they tell me to join two couples on #1 tee box getting ready to tee off. I ask if we were going to play as a 5some and he told me one couple only had one golfer.

So I join them on the tee box. One couple is mid 30s husband and wife. They are both playing and the husband ends up being the linebackers coach at USF.

Here's where it gets good. The other couple is mid 50s Italian Mafia looking guy and a smoking hot late 20s school teacher. Ends up that this guy owns a company called FL Caddie Girls and auditioning this school teacher for a job.

He immediately asks if she can ride with me so he can see how she interacted with clients and what her golf etiquette knowledge. I was 50 at the time.

Like I said, smoking hot late 20s in tennis outfit. So we tee off and start the round. I make small talk with her and we finally get to the 1st green. She is holding the flag for the group and I'm last to putt out. When I do, she bends over right in front of me to get the ball out of the cup and she's wearing a bright pink G string under her tennis skirt instead of those sewn in shorts. Wow!

The coach and his wife are laughing out loud as they've been told the Caddie Girls audition bit.

Anyway, this teacher is wiping down my clubs after every shot, rubbing my shoulders between holes, holding the flag on every green. The Mafia dude is telling her what to do to earn great tips and etc...

She is real candid about being a school teacher and wanting to earn cash during summer. Cost for a round with one of the Caddie Girls that would meet you at whatever course around Tampa was $150 plus tips and whatever you wanted to negotiate after the round.

I was a solid 10 hc back then but probably shot about 110 that day. She hinted around at drinks in the clubhouse afterwards but I declined and went home.

Not sure if the website is still up but when I got home I checked it out and it was a real thing. All of the girls were OT 10s RL 8s.

Never saw her or mafia dude again but did play a fews rounds with the coach at USFs The Claw course.

ETA... Site is till up on Facebook and the girls look the same.

A month or so ago a single paired up with me and a buddy on the 10th tee. Before we were teeing off he right away was talking about how good he was. Went and showed us his scorecard, shot a 36 on the front nine. Ok, whatever. The guy is very clearly disabled with a bad limp. Not holding that against him but I was skeptical.

Guy tells us to hit first because he likes to size up his competition. I'm like ok buddy. He get us there and tops his of course. The 10th tee runs along the driving range and the course has ProV's for range balls, it's a private course and I guess he was on a guest pass or something and didn't know it had ProV's on the range. If the tees on the range are up you can sometimes hit them over the net so they'll occasionally be some balls out in the left rough and along the net. Well this dude spends about 5 minutes driving his cart around and probably picked up 20 balls. We were on the green and he was still 50 yards out and hasn't hit his third shot and was still picking up balls.

Guy throughout the back 9 kept talking about how good he was and dogging the course (the course is incredible). I kept thinking does this guy think we are blind or something? I'm watching you double and triple bogey every single hole. I know for a fact, you are not a good golfer Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I don't get why he keeps telling me he's good. He easily shot 55 on the back. Not sure how he shot 36 on the front.

So glad we didn't get paired up on the first because in just nine holes we got to hear about when he was a professional golfer, when he was a mayor of some town, his time in desert storm, his stint as a stand up comedian and a whole bunch other crap. It was so tiresome.

All that being said, I usually don't mind at all being paired up with strangers and almost always end up having a good time.

Sitting in the student union building in college with a couple friends, talking about going to play golf, guy walking by heard and asked if we needed a 4th, we didn’t have one so asked what his handicap was. He said about a 6, which worked.

Or so we thought, first hole we had him pick up after 9, 2nd hole….pick up at 9. He carded 81 on the front, never hit a putt. We quit after 9, apparently he meant 6 a hole.

Got to play Bay Hill. Paired with and shared cart with guy who claimed to be 10-15 handicap. Married couple rounded out the foursome. The married couple weren’t terrible because they played pretty quick but neither could break 100.

The guy I rode with probably shot 150. He said he shot 67 on front but who knows. He made at least a 20 on 18 but finished out the hole. Took over 6 hours to finish the round with multiple groups stacked up behind us. Ranger kept telling us to hurry but said too many groups to let play through.

Three of us was playing Glenloch Pines here a couple of years ago and the starter said he was putting a guy with us. I swear this guy looked like a poorly dressed Hobo and his irons and vinyl bag were circa the 1970's. I never forget his driver was a McGregor Mac metal wood with a gear design on the crown. He proceeds to shoot a effortless 71 and he must have smoke 18 cigarettes that round. The greens were bumpy and just punched and I swear he barely missed 3 putts inside of 10 feet. He was a pleasant guy and he could pure some iron shots with those worn out Hogans. We still talk about him . It was quite the experience.

I love this kind of stuff.

Badass.

I played with Bobby Phills at Dumas back in the 90s a couple times.

I was paired with Luke Combs at Regatta Bay in Destin a few years ago. I don't follow country music so I had no idea who he was. Basically the whole round people carted up to us and asked for pictures with him. At the end of the round he gave me the email address of one of his assistants and said to email for tickets when he comes near Baton Rouge.

He was in the 100 to 110 range. He said he played football and had some athletic ability for a big guy.

I live in Greatwood in Sugarland and Scottie Pippen use to live here when with the Rockets.

Charles Barkley lived in a neighborhood close by called New Territory at the time.

One afternoon my neighbor and I decided to play Greatwood GC and Barkly and Pippen joined up with us.

It was hilarious the whole day. They were both terrible and they were betting a 100.00 a hole. At the end of the round, they finished about even.

Pippens Wilson irons were 2.5 inches long and he used green victory jumbo grips with 4 wraps. Each iron felt like it weighed 10 pounds.

I guarantee that Barkley hit at least 10 balls O.B. and Pippen was close to that number.

Best part, they joined us for a beer and both wrote out long thoughtful autographs for my neighbors special needs son.

That kid was over the moon when he got those.

Here is my stranger story. Me and a vendor buddy were in Orlando playing one of the Disney courses back in maybe 2002 one Spring afternoon after a morning of meetings that nobody really gave a flying frick about at a pipeline convention. We are on #1 waiting on a group in the fairway when Brett Farve and another dude come rolling up. Brett is wearing flip flops and has a huge dip. I actually know a friend from work that is from Picayune and him and his wife know Brett and his wife pretty well so after kinda making the realization that we are gonna be on top of each other for most of the round I mention that I am friends with the guy he knows while we are pacing around the carts. After a how do you know that fricktard statement and with the ice officially broke, we played 18. Brett is a pretty interesting dude and although not a great golfer, he can hit it a mile. Maybe just not straight.

I got paired up with a guy a couple of weeks ago that told me he was a 8 HC. After he teed off on #1, I knew better. This dude was everywhere in the woods and in the water on every hole. After the round he was in his cart totaling his score and I asked him “well how did you do”? He smiled and said “I shot a 84” and I replied with a 84? He said “yea I don’t count penalty shots”.

Well shite, that's the only thing holding me back from being a single handicap. I should give it a try.

I never really understood this behavior. We all had no idea what we were doing at one time or another. I’m no great golfer by any means but I do ok. I usually play as a single so I often get paired up with another single or group and generally they are either nervous to be paired up with someone because they claim to be terrible or they are WAY better than me. Both scenarios usually work out well. If they are terrible I don’t say anything about it but I try to be supportive if they have a good attitude. I tell them I don’t care if they shoot a billion. Just enjoy yourself and keep trying. I’m just there to have some chill time. Met a couple of new golf buddies this way, and whenever we are going to the course at the same time we usually pair up.

Most people are pretty easy going. On the rare occasion I meet up with a shite head I just tell them I’m going to skip a few holes and “I’ll see you around.”

Took the kids to a local muni. At the time my son was a junior and a 3. My daughter was playing in college (NAIA) and a 5 from the men's tees (not the tips).

Some poor sap was paired with the three of us. My daughter teed-off and piped a driver about 220ish. Dude just went back in the club house. Not sure if he waited for another group or got a refund.

Barkley and Pippen were both very friendly and engaging the whole round.

And he gave the waitress in the clubhouse a 20 dollar tip.
