I think the same could be said about all of our catchers this year. It was the strangest thing. They looked hopeless for a long time this season, then around the same time, they all seemed to get it together.
They weren’t perfect by any means, but looking at how they finished compared to how they started, it was almost a complete 180
The key was the light coming on for Arrambide. It then meant rest and recuperation for Hernandez.

So you saw a bad play? He has doubles and even a triple. He isn’t Jabba The Hut. Of course 295 is too big. But now he is about to start conditioning in Louisiana and have the best coaches and nutritionists around. He will never be fleet of foot, but 6’2 270/275 isn’t that bad. I also don’t think he carries the weight that badly
As for first base, he was pretty damn good at GCU but that doesn’t mean a whole lot. I am quite confident Jay said he can get more power out of him while slimming him down, potentially a NC, and a solid draft spot. It seems like Jay saw a guy who walked 122 times to 91 K’s (even in the WAC) in 3 years with a career BA of .328 and OPS of .981…and said that is our 1B or DH. He is playing though

I saw Yorke lay down a bunt and literally almost fall down trying to get out of the box going to first.
I’ve seen a lot of smaller, agile guys slip out of the box on a bunt. I’ve never seen a 300 pounder even attempt a bunt; I think that is pretty impressive because it sounds like he got it down.

I think it's the new-school teachings regarding framing with the one knee approach. It allows the catcher to steal more strikes, but the downside is it's harder to smother pitches in the dirt.

I despise the one knee down approach altogether but especially in college.
As long as we are still depending on human umpires that miss pitches all the time (both balls and strikes), the reward of stealing a strike every now and then is not worth the drop in defense that we have seen IMO

I have not. I’m standing up for the big guy.
Based on your post, we are on the same page

Most big guys who make it this far in baseball have a pretty good feel for the game, whether that be offensively or defensively

I don't know how much it will factor into 2026 but that team wll have a lot of experience. A lot of upperclassmen, Omaha experience, etc.

I would like to see Cooper Williams potentially become a weekend starter
As far as Yorke, Jay should let him run through football conditioning drillls along with Pearson this August - that will shed some weight for sure
As far as catcher, you can look for Serna to likely get one game a weekend to catch or some midweek time as you definitely need two at that position to get through the long season

I dislike it situationally, but I do think it's a net-positive in the long run.
Comparing our last 3 teams to reach the CWS finals (because they would've played roughly the same number of games):
In 2025, we had 12 passed balls. Our opponents had 10.
In 2023, we had 16 (9 from Travinski). Our opponents had 13.
In 2017, we had 7. Opponent data not available.
LSU's website only goes back to 2014 and the fewest passed balls was 6 (excluding 2020, which had 4).
So we're talking about fewer than 10 extra bases across an entire season. you can steal enough strikes in a weekend series to equal 10 bases.
I will acknowledge this data is incomplete because there's a non-zero amount of wild pitches that could be stopped with the old approach, but there's no way to quantify it so I left it out.

I know post fall ball would be a better time for this question but how do you guys think each position group compares to last year's team?
worse/slightly worse/wash/slightly better/better
Starting pitching: slightly worse
Bullpen: Better
Catching defense: wash
Infield defense: ???
Outfield defense: slightly better
Offense overall: ???

Infield defense will be worse
Replacing Dickinson and Braswell with Dardar/Simpson/Caraway/Pearson/Reaves in any combination will be a step down.
Overall offense is interesting:
Key Loss: Dickinson, Bear, Frey, Hernandez.
Can Arrambide step up and replace Hernandez’s production? I think so.
Can Dardar give us dickinson type numbers? I think so. that dude mashed at Kansas State.
Replacing Jones and Frey is going to be hard. Thats 35/103 home runs.
Starting pitching i would bet overall down, but I could also see it being really good across the board.
The ceiling in Evans is the sky
I am also super interested to see how schmidt looks next season.
SEC vs OOC stats
OOC: 30.1 IP 11 ER 40k 1 BB 3.36 ERA
SEC Stats 2 IP 6 ER 1 k 11 BB 27.00 ERA.
The walls are what stand out. I think this kid just needs a year to settle in. SEC lights were a little too bright for him.

Not doubting Yorke’s ability to hit. Just want to see his range and defense at first base.

Today Musso said York was the #20 player in the whole portal. He said it not me, I was very surprised.
Posted on 7/16/25 at 4:47 pm to Wadey
Why are you surprised? Portal isn’t that strong and his track record is pretty impressive.

who are some of the 2027 Louisiana guys that LSU are interested in?
Posted on 7/16/25 at 5:09 pm to nps6724
I don’t think you can judge it strictly on passed balls. If the ball hits the dirt, it will be scored as a wild pitch, but many of those you still expect the catcher to block the ball, especially 2 strike breaking balls in the dirt. You can’t tell it just from the stats but not all wild pitches are on the pitcher.
