It’s basically what happened to college basketball years ago. Can’t even hardly watch anymore.

I could live with two year contracts. Lock in for two years and you could transfer every year if you decide to after that until you run out of eligibility. RS counts as a year. Its a compromise but at least you dont develop and then lose year 2

Yes. Their agreed upon pay.

A bigger % of our baseball team hits the portal and comes from the portal every year than the football team

Baseball pays more nil money than any other baseball program in the country

Nil and the portal in cbb created less parity and less teams can win the NC than before while in football in actually expanded the number of teams that can win a NC

College football is the worse it’s ever been in its 100+ year history right now

Yea it was so much better when black people couldnt play

If they would have slight guardrails on the portal and nil it be the best it’s ever been
More teams have a chance to win than ever and the playoffs actually decide the best team on the field

I don't cheer for a new team every year. Always lsu.

Exactly!

People are acting like Joe Burrow (and the Natty and Heisman) and Jayden Daniels (and another Heisman) didn't come to us through the portal - or, they're conveniently forgetting. Players have always been here for 3-4 years and then moved on to the NFL. Now, it's 1-2 or 3-4 - big deal. It's still LSU! Everyone is making it seem like players were here for an 8-10 year career before the transfer portal came along.

And Mathieu loved Lsu so much he got kicked off the team

That had zero to do with LSU and everything to do with addiction. Look at his life and his story and get back to me about his love for the program. He does nothing but represent LSU with pride.

As far as Peterson he still talks up LSU all the time. He wouldn’t have “transferred out” because his feelings were hurt like this grabbers.

You’re a problem with society - spoiled children. Parents from the last 40 years ought to be ashamed of themselves for creating the 80’s/90’s/2000’s generation.

I lost interest in college basketball 10-15 years ago because of having to learn entire new teams every single year. I grew up a Duke basketball fan and there's never any carry over anymore. I haven't watched a game this season.

I don't want college football to become the same. Nothing sounds worse than buying a new quarterback every year

I cheer for LSU, not the names on the back of the jerseys.

There are plenty of players who played for lsu in this era who love the school and rep it all the time including to transfer in burrow and Daniel

Peterson had to get paid a bunch of money to even think about coming to lsu and would’ve thought about leaving if playing in same era

Typical fricking boomer you are - throwing insults because you know you got owned by facts

we all do that, but we also want to feel an emotional attachment to the players.

In years past, most of our roster was from Louisiana and most stayed through most of their college career, so we built a connection to them.

But now, it's very difficult to feel any emotional attachment when the players are paid mercenaries who come and go in great numbers every year. So there's very little continuity.

That ain't good for the game.

All I can add is I dont take losses that hard anymore. Within a few minutes I’m back to real life. In a way its nice, but it sucks knowing how little it all matters. The highs and lows both were nice in a way because they meant I cared

Good post but I dont think worrying about g5's roster retention should be a major consideration.

If my aunt had balls she’d be my uncle

The luckiest team could win it now and majority aren’t deserving because they didn’t do enough in the regular season to earn a spot. This is just like the watered down NFL not how college football was the past 100+ years built on tradition.

If more teams have a chance to win it let’s just add 24 teams to the playoffs next year.

FTR, Burrow did not come to us through the portal. He graduated early from tOSU and was eligible to transfer and play immediately. Jayden did come through the portal.

I think what's being overlooked here is that the CFB game that resulted in an LSU that Joe and Jayden would want to transfer to, is becoming an extinct specie.

sostan
- great post and I for one appreciate that someone actually proposes paths to make the game better as opposed to dismissing criticism to what CFB has become with "well, don't watch."

What I am want to add is:
- Financially incentivize players toward staying for their full eligibility. For example, say a Fr gets $100K, a So $200K, Jr $400K, Sr, $800K, and a 5Y Sr $1,600K, If a player transfers, they forfeit whatever they accumulated and start over at their new school.
- Consider shrinking the rosters, In a given game, teams use about 55 players.
- Beyond the playoff regardless if it's 4 or 8 or 12 teams, have the next 16-teams have their own playoff with financial incentives for each win. This would discourage bowl opt-outs.

CFB was a great sport. It still can be. But apart from tradition and the school-team-player continuum, it's going in the direction of minor league baseball.
