I was right. Spencer Mathews is el garbage.
Seriously stfu. Matthews has great potential for a pitcher who was a walkon last year.
Beau Didier needs to be in the starting lineup somewhere come Feb.
Again, thanks for the updates Carl. You do an excellent job each and every time!

training is different for a bullpen pitcher and a starter...if he trains to be a starter, stretches his arm out to pitch 6+ IP, then he'll be fine.
I'm not worried about arm strength. Being a starter also has to do with mixing pitches properly and throwing any pitch at any time in the count, which relievers don't have to do as much.
Of course the kid was an All American so I don't know why I'm doubting him

Speaking of Dean, he is about a week away from swinging a bat after having an appendectomy that set back his return. He was already recovering from summer surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder. He told me it was hard to watch practice without being able to participate.
Mainieri said he hoped Dean could join practice for the last 2-3 weeks of fall workouts.

Great update. Keep them coming.
I was at practice for a few innings and everyone seemed to be quite excited to be scrimmaging. Baseball is back!
These practices are definitely set up to favor the batters, and also the purple team, having the veteran hitters. It will be an exciting season.

Do we know when they practice on Sunday or if they have an intersquad then?

Beau Didier
he is the guy who is batting 1.000 with 1 AB and 1 HR right? if so that dude looks like he has ENORMOUS potential. hope he has a full recovery. could be a great addition to an already super powered offense. damn, if only our FB offense could borrow some of this power in the baseball offseason...
i cant wait for baseball!

he was a starter in HS. He isnt some guy that can only be a relief pitcher
tried to tell everyone this last year....he is better suited in the rotation if we cant find anyone better

He is a 50-75% breaking ball pitcher... Thats like pitching Wakefield and saying he can't throw a knuckleball...

To begin with, the importance of the role of the closer is vastly overhyped. Winning a baseball game is about getting 27 outs, and the last three aren't necessarily more important or harder to get, especially in college and the AL because of the DH. The idea that they are has really only been around since Rollie Fingers and Goose Gossage, when closers began to become stars. The pub that closers get is partly about the fan experience, as they can get excited hearing "Enter Sandman" when Mariano Rivera walks onto the field or "Hells Bells" when Trevor Hoffman enters the game. Anyway, in college, a starter who pitches 6 innings a weekend is much more valuable to the team than a closer who pitches 1 or 2 innings.
Besides all that, though, Matty Ott is fundamentally a control pitcher. He is much better suited to be a starter than a closer. As a rule, closers have either an overpowering fastball or a devastating out pitch like Hoffman's changeup, and that isn't Ott's game. I know this may get some people riled up, but I think Chad Jones will be a better closer than Ott. Ott should start.

I think I saw that he played first, not real sure. I know he still can't throw though. I would imagine, when the season comes around that his position will either be DH or 1B.
