brennan at least has accuracy and a arm. will have to work on his reads/awareness but he was coming along fine before injury. brennan can run RPO also. he did it with E and linehan. we will beat his arse this year.

Brennan needs to figure out a way to not get hurt. Adding pilates or yoga to his exercise routine right now going into spring would help him a lot to prevent injury. He needs more flexibility with strength. He is still young enough to gain a lot in 6 months time.

He was by no means bad. But he's never going to be a transcendent player at that position. That is, one that can routinely make the tough throws and win you games when you have to put the game on the QB's shoulders. Kind of like his Dad's NFL career. If the rest of the team around him has tremendous talent (like was the case in Tampa Bay) Johnson is good enough to do what is necessary to win games. But he's not going to be able to carry a team like the great QB's can.

Going into the Florida game, we were top 3 in passes per game. I think miss st and Western Kentucky were the 2 teams passing more. He has good stats, and low ints cause he takes so many sacks. When boutte got hurt he got exposed for not being able to go through reads.

If you're honest about his qb traits, you would not say he has a good arm, he does not throw a good deep ball, jumps when he throws, runs from clean pocket or stands staring at 1 wr until he's sacked, and until atm... would scramble out and forget he can't go get a first down or throw the ball away for 0 negative impact.

He played like he was trying to be a good qb, vs against atm trying to be a good football player. If someone lights a fire under him, and cleans up his feet in the pocket, he can be a very good team manager type qb.

Same case for Trent Dilfer. Dilfer had stacked team around him.

I thought that people were way too hard on Max.

He's someone that needed to be coached up by highly competent position coaches and coordinators to get the most out of him and he didn't receive that here with O's clown show.

Max deserved criticism but I always had in the back of my mind that it took a generational QB to succeed under O.

He wasn't the problem but wasn't the solution either. You can find players with his talent level every year so not a huge loss IMO.

Missed a wide open easy TD in game 1 on a pass that wasn’t even 10 yards. Followed that up w a horrendous int in the early second half and of course the backwards pass. Infuriating play. I don’t think there is any doubt that if Brennan doesn’t get hurt that we still have O as coach. It woulda been a 3 loss season at most.

People were too hard on Max.
He was young, inexperienced and had a leaky OL. Play calling was terrible.
He had flaws for sure and likely does not have the upside of say, Nuss (who needs LOTS of development) or Howard.
But if you exclude Burrow, Max is one of the better QBs at LSU over the past decade and is a BIG improvement over Harris, Jefferson, Hatch, etc.

Coaches failed him big time. Better play calling could have masked some of his deficiencies

Max Johnson issue was that he was continually thrown in an unwinnable situation. He didn’t have OC’s that could help him develop. They continually rolled a left handed quarterback out to the right. With all the troubles, he still was able to have success.

Feel like this all has more to do with his dad than him. You’re leaving a starting position, even if by default, for the possibility of being a starter.

He was, but not necessarily for his play in the field. I though he played fairly well for a guy with his experience.

Given how things ended up transpiring, it would appear that his problem is leadership; he doesn’t have any.

No we had lots of problems but Max is wildly inaccurate at crucial times. He also has a slow release and zero awareness. If we had a good running game and could pick up blitzes we probably wouldn’t have noticed his issues as much. Also there was a leadership issue with him on that team. He sat by himself on the sideline and in the team meeting when CBK was speaking. Something wasn’t right in the locker room with Johnson. JMO

I won’t bash the kid for trying the best he could but good god you people make it sound like he was worse that Jordan Jefferson which damn sure is not the case.

So you set up a thread to allow fans to bash Johnson and Jefferson yet again.

No self awareness whatsoever.

This. When Joe Burrow came to LSU in the summer of 2018, other only players I remember quitting the team were Justin McMillan and Lowell Narcisse.
