Tony Skinn at George Mason has never won fewer than 20 games as a HC, hes in his third season and they are 18-1. He also was an assistant at LA Tech for a bit.
I like Tony skinn. Idk if the resume is long enough for him yet. But if they took a chance on him, I would t be mad.

Bill Armstrong
Travis Steele may get a look, he is currently 20-0 with Miami Ohio, although he did get fired at Xavier. May be better in the portal era
Jerrod Calhoun at Utah State. Has won everywhere he has been
Josh Schertz at St Louis. Had like a 83% win percentage in D2. Turned Indiana St around, now has St. Louis 18-1 in year 2.

If we want to take a big swing we should go after The Mayor

This is the answer. Just to see the Ole Miss fans reaction. It would be glorious. And (despite their struggles this year) he is a top end coach at the highest level.

What he may be referring to and really misconstrued are rumors that Stricklin preferred McMahon and Billy Donovan had to convince him to go with Golden. Don't know if any of that is true outside of that we do know Donovan advocated for Golden, however Stricklin is so fricking dumb one can almost believe it.

Josh Schertz will probably be the coach big schools are after next March.

He had no business getting this year.
New coach is ripe for discussion.

Billy Donovan or Rick Pitino

No thanks. Often times he was in control of the defense at LSU...which wasn't good until Wade's final season. Also, many of the times he was the primary scout assistant on the game LSU played worse.
quote:
Travis Steele
Again. No thanks. Xavier was a VERY good program when he took over. A perennial NCAA Tournament with multiple second weekend runs. He immediately turned them into a very average/below average program.

Jerrod Calhoun
Someone to consider. He took over a very good program and has maintained it. The fact that he had success elsewhere is encouraging.

Josh Schertz
Likely going to be the top (or one of the top) mid-major names in this season's job cycle

I don't know if I'd call the Mayor a "big swing". He's winning now at a very tough place to win, but it took quite a while. Would he be willing to get into the recruiting fight in the SEC?
A "big swing" would be Otzelberger at Iowa St. It would take a BIG contract offer to even get him interested. But he's a guy who has already shown he can produce an immediate turnaround in a tough conference. Same for Grant McCasland at Texas Tech. Sadly, he would have taken the LSU job when McMahon was hired. Now, that ship has sailed.
If I'm the AD here are my first calls:
1. Wade. Some aren't going to like that. Some don't think it's possible (it is). But there isn't another coach on the market that has known success at LSU. And he would IMMEDIATELY inject energy and interest from fans and boosters into an otherwise dead program.
2. Chris Beard. The guy has won big at power conf. schools. The Ole Miss job was a necessity...not a desire. He's been good there at an otherwise historically bad (worst in SEC history) program. This year has been an anomaly, and I think it is pretty clear his roster just hasn't clicked. Timing is often everything in these hires. The slight downturn may open the crack for a bigger program like LSU to jump in. Particularly with no Texas jobs on the horizon. Ole Miss fans would go crazy.
3. Scott Drew. He turned down Kentucky last season, so it seems unlikely he would then take a lesser SEC job the next season. However, Baylor is struggling this year and has been on a downward trend since they won it all. Still, he has a long history of winning and a LOT of Louisiana ties. Including a relationship with the lady occupying the WBB office. There is concern with the downslide for Baylor. But Baylor's expectations aren't LSU's right now. It could be a situation like Cal to Arkansas. Sometimes a change of scenery is needed and even if he doesn't win a championship, consistently making the NCAAT would be a big step up from the current state of affairs.
Those shouldn't be the ONLY names on the list. But I do think it's 3 guys with proven histories of success that would at least listen to LSU.

Chris Gerlufsen - San Fran, Golden top assistant when he was there.
Takayo Siddle - UNC Wilmington
T. J. Otzelberger - Iowa State

Very few people on this board watch college basketball outside of the tournament so I think you're going to be hard pressed to get real names other than Wade. I would love if Wade came back, but one thing that wade has shown is that he's fairly loyal to schools so I just think it will be EXTREMELY difficult to pull him away from NC St after only one year.
Outside of Wade, I think the other 2 and Josh Schertz should be your first calls. I also really like Jerrod Calhoun at Utah St. The good news about this cycle is that you really shouldn't have a ton of big names looking for new coaches as opposed to when we hired mcmahon it seemed like everyone was searching for a new coach. Off the top of my head, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, Arizona St and possibly South Carolina and Penn State may be looking for coaches. Imo LSU can beat any of those teams out for a coach. My personal pipe dream for a coach is that we could somehow pull Mick Cronin from UCLA. He has bitched multiple times about travel/cultural issues at UCLA. Again it is 1000% not likely that you could get him away from UCLA but a guy can dream
Other than those your options are either to give a retread a second chance (somebody like Bryce Drew, Shaka Smart, or Travis Steele) or go with a fairly unknown name from a smaller program like we did with Mcmahon. I'm just not sure our fan base has the stomach for that risk again

What about Hoiberg? I know he’s making good money but LSU is a vertical move, we’d probably just have to pay more than we’re planning to.
Posted on 1/21/26 at 9:52 am to Madking
Hoiberg is probably one of the best coaches in the country right now that most people don't know. He would be a fantastic pull, but like you said you're going to have to pay him top tier money (probably $6+ million plus a significant NIL plan). Supposedly Nebraska basketball's NIL is behind other top Big 10 programs, but whether or not we could put something better together is the real question.
If anything I actually think Hoiberg being so good makes getting Otzelberger from Iowa State a little bit easier. I think Hoiberg is a better coach than Otzelberger and Hoiberg has super deep ties to Iowa St. and would 100% leave Nebraska for Iowa St. If we were to put together a package for Otzelberger, in my opionion Iowa St would fight a lot less to keep him because they would then have the opportunity to have arguably the best player in their history leading their program and they know they could pull him.

I have a question. What is the problem with LSU men's basketball? Is it the money/talent or is it coaching?
If it's money/talent, is LSU going to throw big NIL money at the basketball program when they hire a new coach?
If the answer is yes, then why not do it now with McMahon?
If the answer is no, then I have to assume that LSU thinks the coach is the problem in which they will hire a new one. From here, we're going to find out what truth is.
