What's the issue?
No issue, except some things I believe are best left confidential and concealed from family members.

Are they going to ask you for money, or question what you do with it?
I can't say what they would ask if they knew, but since they don't know, they won't ask.

I didn't mind sharing that info when I was first out of college making shite money, or now that I do much better.
We're far removed from college and we are both doing very well in our professional careers and provide for our children. That's all that really anyone from our families needs to know.

I have one friend close enough to discuss actual numbers with but I grew up not knowing my dads income til I was 30 years old and he needed help with his taxes

Don't get me wrong, I don't run around blabbing numbers to everyone. I have one close friend that I talk specifics and budgeting with, but if another friend asks I won't shy away from giving a ball park.
I never really knew what my parents made until I was an adult, but that didn't really affect me. On the other hand, my in-laws didn't discuss that type of stuff with their kids and two of them (other than my wife) have no sense of what things cost (nice cars, homes, etc...) and no sense of what kind of salary you have to attain to have nice things.

I remember my parents sitting me down as a teenager and showing me exactly how much was coming in and how much was going out and how much was left over
Pretty sure this was in response to me bitching about not getting a brand new truck

My wife grew up getting pretty much anything she wanted when she wanted it and she's the second tightest person I know(behind my dad). I think some of my spending habits come from watching him being so tight while I was growing up and don't want to end up like that

Is this based on net or gross income?

I think it depends on the family. I have no issue sharing with my mother or in laws, how much we make. I don't flaunt it, but they aren't going to knock on the door asking for money. In fact, we are trying to give them money right now for a financial issue they are having and they are saying thanks but no thanks.

I found out when I did my financial aid, and I was like - damn dad, you can't pay for my school????
I don't tell everyone, but I am up for a bi-directional exchange of information. I don't see why money topics are so taboo, they certainly are not outside much of the US. I know in India, strangers will ask you how much money make.
I really have only had one problem with it. I told my close friend, I thought he would be cool about it. But is always like - let's go to vegas! Buy everyone beers, you can afford it. And I can, but the reason I can afford it is b.c I am not stupid with my money.

This is major reason why we don't discuss salaries with friends and family. B/c we already get enough grief for not traveling to visit enough, or doing family cruises/vacations, or traveling to every college acquaintances weddings and showers.
Our family would only see the annual number. Very few comprehend how much goes away when you are making out 401k, contributing to 529, loading a HSA, etc.

He is the only one that has been an issue. Luckily my mother and in laws are also crazy conservative when it comes to money. We have rules that we follow around visits. And they understand it.
Although I foresee my father being an issue. Honestly I am surprised that my father hasn't produced a bill for my childhood.

This is the only issue I've had. I'll talk in general about what I make with my cousin who I lived with in college. Very close. His dad showed me checks for several million dollars when he sold one of his companies. Their family's money was always talked about around me. They have more money than I'll ever make, so its not that big of a deal. Only issue is I make more money than my cousin. But I dont have a trust fund and millions in inheritance. He spends almost everything he makes. When we do things together and I dont want to pay for something , his forst response is, quit being so tight, you make more than me. But he doesnt have a car note, retirement, fuel bill, cell phone bill, etc. His parents even pay to have their maid go clean his house. Its frustrating, but I get to reap the benefits of the toys his dad buys him, so I cant complain.

depends. Making 100k as a single male would have you feeling like Upper class. You could have a nice place downtown, nice car, and take vacations without worry with your friends anytime you want
Ehh depends on where you live. For example in Seattle, LA, NYC at $100k you would live in an average apartment.....with roommates

Eh, my first apartment in NYC was okay. $2850/mo around 26th and Park. Pretty nice spot. No frills and small, but location was pretty great for my tastes.
I fit this description. Work right at 40 hours a week on average and decently above $100k. Banking.

$100k is plenty to live by yourself with a great city in any country. Let's assume a 50% take home (this tries to take into account federal, state, and local tax and maybe a bit for a 401k), so $50K...assume $30K goes towards rent ($2,500/month) then that leaves you $20,000/year to do anything you want. Maybe $1,000 goes to transportation, $5,000 to food, throw in another $3,000 for other random bills...still have $11,000 remaining in fun money.
If you live with roommates, then housing goes from $30,000/year down to probably $15,000/year giving significantly more breathing room.
$100K is a ton of money for a single, male with or without roommates or a girlfriend.

20k/year to spend on everything but rent and that's a good life? You are underestimating other life expenses. $1000/year for transportation for example? That's bus fare.
Posted on 8/17/15 at 6:45 pm to CajunAlum Tiger Fan
Make it $5000 in other additional random stuff and you still have $6000 for enjoyment.
I assumed a larger amount to taxes than would actually happen and that the person lives by himself for $30k/yr in rent. I'm pretty sure that is conservative.

I'm a year out of engineering school. Don't nearly make $100k and I work 55-60 hours a week. Mortgage, student loans, car note, etc....
Hoping it pays off. Congrats to all you who actually clear $100k without working like a slave. Hope I pass you up soon
