They paid for the rights and would prefer people watch. Pretty simple.

How is this even a thread?

My favorite is the vaguely worded articles on ESPNs website. You’re 90% sure it’s about WNBA but have to click on it because it’s vague enough it could be something important

Then someone is presenting to management the increasing level of interest based on all of the clicks.

They used to run ads during NFL Countdown on Sunday for Bowling.

Why? Because they were going to switch to bowling at Noon since they only had the Sunday night game. Now Monday…. I think…?

Why do they do it?

Have you not been paying attention lately? We are promoting sex change for children, gay everything and trannyball.

What's a little women's basketball thrown in there? It's not like they care if you like it.

At lunch yesterday, ESPN had their Top 10 plays and number 2, that's 2, was WNBA guard lost control of her dribble, fighting for the ball with someone else, slaps it to a team mate who does a step back 3 and makes it. So exciting!

The WNBA is a sports leagues. ESPN covers sports.

I know this is pretty groundbreaking stuff.

Soccer pulls that too. I don't follow enough to know the schedule but I'll see like Man City vs Arsenal live and think I have something watchable

I just noticed the new Women's Basketball Immaculate Grid the other day while doing the daily baseball grid.

LINK

I have clicked on it a few times to see if I could guess any and haven't gotten one yet.

Because their advertising money is all funny money not backed by real dollars?

Several weeks ago, I was using a site that had every third ad for the wnba ?? midseason game. The eyes on some of the women were even demon red. If they had paid for that amount of air time, the wnba would be bankrupt

ESPN: “We will promote the WNBA and eventually people will watch it…”

The rest of the universe:

Oh no. They care. They care a lot and it makes them so mad that more so many people completely have no interest in it. And you’re also sexist and a misogynist for not wanting to watch wnba.

But it’s not done proportionally to what people watch/want to watch. That’s the thing I’m curious about.

That’s nice and all but considering the WNBA brings in jack for viewership (or money at all) this is obviously forced by the NBA/esg concerns.

Yea, it is forced by the NBA. They have a significant financial stake in the league and are gonna force ESPN to play along

It is bizarre watching ESPN put it on the ticker next to CFB or late season MLB games. Or watching SportsCenter as they cut from a divisional MLB game to Mystics v whoever for a league as relevant at the Professional Lacrosse League.
