Sad that Marcus Freeman turned out to be a pussy.
Contrast that will Vand's head coach and senior leadership. "We lost 2 games, therefore we have no room to complain."

Agree.
If the networks who put the deal together realize nobody wants to watch B1G Football, their honeypot is screwed.
Adding a team people may want to see is the only way through.

We would, and a few years of them not getting the sweetheart preferential treatment to slide into the playoffs will very quickly change their opinion on joining a conference.

Notre Dame does not want to give up NBC football money. That’s why they are Independent and will stay such

They're under the ACC GOR in their non-football sports. And IIRC, the GOR gives the ACC the right to all ND athletic events (except for football), no matter how many other teams are at the event. That would be problematic enough for basketball. But it would be even more problematic for something like track and field, where the ACC would then have the TV rights to the entire Big Ten track championships if just one ND runner make the track championship. And, as stupid as it sounds, the BTN basically has to air stuff that nobody watches like track and field championships just so that TV providers won't drop the BTN from roughly mid-March until late August of every year.
The legal validity of the GOR isn't really determined since FSU, Clemson, and UNC settled out of court. But if the GOR is legally valid, there's really no way the Big Ten can take ND.

They make 50 million per year from NBC and about 17 million from the other sports via ACC, Big Ten teams make 63 million each on their TV deal. They aren’t too far off, and the Big Ten’s new deal is expected to greatly exceed that.

Then the big 10 would get 5 teams in the playoff

They’ll only get them if they bring along someone else to get to 20 but there is no other option out there for them to get. Unless they want UConn.
There are a number of schools better than UConn that would leap at the opportunity to go to the B1G

why the Big 10? They are already full members in all other sports with the ACC and 1/2 ACC member in football. (i think they have to play 4 or 5 ACC games)

it’s not all about football. That’s a big part of it, but membership in the big ten is just as much about academic research and institutional sharing. They’ve engaged in that in the past, and it’s probably not the hurdle it was in the past, but I’m not sure the league would trust that Notre Dame would take the blood brother oath.
??
The only reason ND and the Big Ten wouldn't join is football. ND is a top institution and is an AAU member. They'd be a member of the Big10 alliance with no problem. Football independence is the only sticking point. It's got nothing to do with academics.
Everybody's always known the Big Ten is ND's true conference home cause the academics are not an issue.

Okay who? Who can feasibly do it? What other white whale is out there?

Notre Dame wants to be treated as a one team conference, The Big One. The NCAA has been allowing that to happen for decades.

UNC & Duke are two that would do it in a heartbeat.

This is almost for sure the first time that the benefit of the doubt has NOT gone ND’s way.
They play a couple of tough games, the rest are cupcakes, and usually get to waltz their way in to the right position.
Joining the Big 10, albeit not the SEC, sure as heck won’t help that formula.

It’s only about football and TV $. ND brings in both. Certainly a lot more than expansion members Oregon, Nebraska, Rutgers etc.

ND is a far better academic school than most in the Big 10 and elsewhere.

What would it be? Third? Behind Northwestern and Michigan?

If the Big Ten ever expanded again by adding ACC teams (Miami, GT, Duke, Virginia), I could see them finally linking up with the Big Ten.
Posted on 12/10/25 at 7:59 am to AlaTiger
No league should accept them unless they participate in all sports.

Does anyone else besides me LIKE that ND is independent? It’s a different schedule for them every year and adds an additional wrinkle into the whole fabric of the sport.
