It is a very good book. And he is dead on about the sales racket. TB sales, and especially the bloodstock agents, are shady as shite, even after they tried to make it more apparent. I have no idea how guys like Lukas weren’t actually indicted for fraud. He must of bilked his clients for hundreds of thousands if not million + through the 80s if half the things you hear about are true.

Big Reds heart weighed about 19 pounds. Sham has a similarly large heart. They also shared a grandfather, I believe.

Yeah looks like it would be a good read, maybe they have it at Archive.org. I just searched for Secretariat references and what I found struck me as gossip. Someone who want to diss Big Red had better be bringing the evidence, IMO.

Horse was likely as juiced up as Arnold Schwarzenegger was at the time. Who cares? That horse obviously had insane genetics and pedigree and all the PED’s in the world won’t turn anyone on here into an elite athlete. That’s not how it works.

Penny Tweedy's favorite horse was really Riva Ridge.
Riva Ridge would have won the Triple Crown had the track at Pimlico not been so muddy for the Preakness. Riva Ridge was known to hate the mud.

Next they will say he was really racing as a philly because of the name of the horse associated with a Secretary.

The Ken Burns documentary will say he was really black.

Let's see, you offer is this as a possible corroborating point:
Let's see, how would we get that information. A necropsy
Hmmm. Something seems off here. Not only does steroid use sometimes cause heart enlargement, it does it in part by causing thickening of the muscle which will actually cause the efficacy of the heart to deteriorate, pumping blood much less efficiently. Yet the vet seemed to think the heart was perfect.

The average Thoroughbred's heart weighs about 8.5 lbs. Secretariat's heart weighed nearly three times that number!

the veterinarian who performed the necropsy, Thomas Swerczek, head pathologist at the University of Kentucky, did not weigh Secretariat's heart, but stated, "We just stood there in stunned silence. We couldn't believe it. The heart was perfect. There were no problems with it. It was just this huge engine.

Here is another interesting tidbit from the Vet.

"I was amazed. There were no pathological abnormalities of the heart, typically found in an animal with an enlarged heart. All of the chambers were normal. There were no lesions. It was a perfect heart, everything was just bigger,” he explained, “the average Thoroughbred’s heart is about 8-9 lbs. After doing necropsies on thousands of horses, I was very accurate at knowing how much a horse’s heart would weigh just by looking at it. I estimated his heart to be 21-22 lbs., nearly 2.5 times larger than the average heart. I did the necropsy on his sire, Bold Ruler, who did not have a large heart. Years later, I also performed the necropsy on Sham, Secretariat’s famous rival. Ironically, he had the second largest heart I had ever seen, at 19 lbs., and yet he was still coming in 2nd to Secretariat,” he recounted. “I have to say, in all the years I have been performing necropsies, no horses have ever come close to either of them.”

some of the people saying this had tried to mate mares with him and were pissed off that it didn’t take or produce Secretariat II, like that was a sure thing or something.
They found out a few years later that his superior genetics were only passed through his female offspring to their sons.

Secretariat was a huge physical beast, an anomaly, one in a million.

Secretariat lived to be 19 years old. Nothing was wrong with his heart. It was just naturally big.

I guess I'm saying if his heart was that big because they doped him then he also would've had to have heart failure and therefore, unable to perform. I suppose the heart changes could have occurred after his racing days were done but he probably would've just rolled over and died at that point.
They have already tracked the x chromosome mutant gene that caused his large heart. The same gene that he could not give his sons. Thus why his sons never had much success.
