Akbar (Jimmy Wehba) was born and raised in Vernon TX. He looked like a bookie from Chalmette who stopped at an Italian restaurant, grabbed a table cloth, and wrapped it around his head on the way to the arena.

And if you ever listened to any of the “shoot interviews” Akbar did when that became a big thing in the last couple of decades for former wrestlers to do, he sounded when he was just talking and not performing exactly like someone from Vernon, Texas, LOL.

In the 1920s, a promoter named Jack Pfefer exposed everything in an expose about himself.

70's Mid-South Wrestling out of Memphis was the greatest.
11:00 Saturday mornings... started on WHBQ 13 then moved over to WMC 5. Best hour and a half on TV of the week to a kid.
This was back when they'd print the results to the Monday night card at the Mid South Coliseum in the Sports pages every Tuesday morning.
Yeah, we knew it was fake... didn't care though.

Good question, it started as a carnival type deal and it was never meant to be revealed to the public that it was a work. My guess would be that it’s syndication, the legal and insurance matters that came with it caused Kayfabe to be leaked to the public. I would think that some of the more public legal problems some of the big name guys got into shed even more light on wrestling exposing it to the public. I’d guess late 70s early 80s is when widespread public knowledge of kayfabe came to be.

Wrestling isn’t fake, it’s worked. Big distinction. It’s never been a legitimate “competitive sport,” it’s always been entertainment, and while I think Vince McMahon is one of the most vile pieces of flotsam and jetsam ever born of a woman, him admitting that was something that should have been done 50 years earlier. Getting rid of kayfabe didn’t stop people from watching.

Why do you say this? Genuinely curious.

I may be out in the ether but I think the old school promoters should have had more faith in their audience.
And the more I think about it I am out in the ether because back in the day they didn’t have the merchandising tie-ins, etc., that Vince had to keep the audience coming.
Always the morons or children or man-babies out there that think it's not worked.
I think you are spot on. Another way of saying, It's not so much fans learned that it was "fake", since everyone always "suspected" even in the early days, but promoters stopped taking kayfabe seriously and in turn the fans understood that it was worked.

Wow...that YouTube clip.
Pretty amazing how McMahon took live Professional wrestling from your Momma's basement to the Pontiac Silverdome in less than a Decade.

I think Jim Stossel or whatever that reporters name is got the ever-loving shite slapped out of him when he asked David? if it was fake? Can’t remember the wrestlers last name, but he hit him so hard, twice I believe he wasn’t around much after that.

semantics
what people mean by wrestling is fake is that the outcome is predetermined
and choreographed
The nights at medieval time are really riding horses and they're really knocking each other off horses with long sticks but it's not really jousting
not a sport

At some point in the 80's Vince McMahon got tired of paying fees to State Sports commissions to license every show and he publicly admitted that it wasn't an actual sport but instead a worked entertainment show. This lead to the terms Sports Entertainment and WWF Superstars instead of wrestling and wrestlers.

Excuse me but I don’t see anyone in this thread trying to argue that it’s a “sport.”

wrassling thread should be on the soccer board

Not into anymore but from 1987ish- 1992ish (6-10ish) I was super into it.
Used to go to video- Rama every weekend and rent 1 or 2 of the PPVs and watch all weekend.
Paint my face like then ultimate warrior with my underwear on wrestling body pillows
Damn I wish life could go back to those times

It got increasingly outlandish in the mid to late 80s.
I think the Ted Dibiase paying for a ref body double plastic surgery angle was a big jump the shark moment where it became very obvious it was a stage play.
The WWF admitted it was scripted in the mid 90s because they were gonna up the violence and antics and the only way to get away with that was to briefly mention it was a production. After they did they went back to pretending it was real, but now with a wink.
