Boseman

I have only seen snippets of this movie - I only watched a handful of the stand-alone films as it is (Iron Man 1 and 2, Ragnorok, Civil War and the GotG films), but Boseman was a legit great actor.

He was really good in the biopics - (42 as Jackie Robinson and James Brown in Get on Up), should have garnered more awards for Get on Up, IMHO.

it was the writing and over the top wokeness that made it a lesser movie than otherwise.

Other than the all-black cast (which was just going off of the source material), what was so over the top woke about it?

The hard core black power dude was the villain.

I’d say MBJ’s sympathetic nature and a few of Shuri’s comments were SJW (Colonizer.)

It didn’t detract from the movie overall but there were some definite moments intended.

I actually appreciated that part. It's what made killmonger a relatable and solid villain, he had reasons for being who he was and you almost sympathized with him.

Her character was just annoying and the thought of her being BP makes me cringe!

I dont see the movie as woke.

But the media treatment of the movie was.
"First black superhero movie"

Ummm. No it wasnt.

I mean, neither of these were over the top.

And by most accounts he seems like a completely great guy.
if you're looking to shed some tears there's an interview he did for Sirius Radio where he talked about the letters he received from dying kids who were excited to see Black Panther but did not live long enough to see the premier. He never mentioned once the fact that he was dying of cancer at that very moment. For an industry that rewards self absorption and narcissism Boseman was unique. He would have had a Denzel-esque career had he lived.

If they were elderly Black people like you claim I'm sure they didn't have a clue who or what T'Challa/Black Panther was about. Only the younger Black audience and Marvel comic geeks would know what the Black Panther is all about.

No they weren’t at all. Falcon and WS has had more eye rolling moments than BP. Was just saying if you were going to look for ammo to rail against it as SJW, it gave you a few rounds.

I don’t like that stuff and nothing in BP was bothersome. As most said here, it was good and mid-upper tier marvel, but the media acting like it was high art and Oscar worthy was embarrassing.

I felt like T'Challa was a better character in Civil War than in his own movie. He barely gets anything to really do.

I think Marvel was stupid to not recast T'Challa. That was a knee-jerk move that took away a quality role for another black actor.

They've elevated The Chad to some type of deity where his roles apparently can't be replaced.

Even James Bond get's re-casted.

I don't know if I've ever felt more awkward then when I turned the corner into the theater to see BP for the first time and was met by an entire theater of elderly black men and women from a local nursing home. Zero exaggeration here, the theater was probably 90% nursing home, my wife and I, one other younger white couple, and the rest was black people of all ages. I thought the elderly may have been confused what the movie was about.

To this day, I still don't understand charities and other orgs renting out theaters and filling them up with folks from the "community" via free tickets.

Why didn't they do this with 12 Years a Slave?

It's not a documentary.

That said, I've seen folks who follow the comic say that there's a canon path to bring Killmonger back, potentially letting him claim his lineage to the throne. I think M'baku has a better angle, since he led Wakanda after the Snap.

Stopped watching about 30 mins in. Not many of these comic book/superhero movies do it for me anyway.

The story was very lackluster. It was propped up by good actors, but the overall plot of the movie was very weak, which is common for Marvel and superhero movies though. Chadwick was a good actor though, shame he passed so soon.

I know the movie gets a lot of shite on here because of how the black community and media propped it up as some landmark moment in cinema, when it's clearly nothing more than a decent marvel movie.

With that said, Boseman fricking killed it as T'Challa. Really is a shame we don't get to see him in that role, or any role any more.

Pretty much spot on. I felt like it needed to come out before Civil War as he was such a bad arse in that one and they needed to put him in danger in BP. I think Kilmonger was underwritten for MBJ. The guy is a good actor and can take that character further if they allow

It was just so...trite and cliched. Hard to come up with better words, maybe, predictable or contrived?

Like in Endgame, the multiple scenes where a group of female-only heroes assembles mid-battle to save the moment...are you sure not one male, or even a raccoon or tree, was also around to help?

I’ll rewatch it to see if I can discern it better and maybe my view was tainted by the negative feelings at the time. Or maybe I’m just a filthy racist.

Where did Black Panther have a moment like this?

It was black dudes fighting black dudes.

Was it? I mean the guy who was very Malcolm X Black Panther-esque (as in the radical group) and wanted to give big guns to the hood so they could fight back against white people, he was the actual super-villain in the movie. He lost in the end, and Tchalla aka the MLK Black Panther made sure to tell him he was wrong. Although he had points in that Wakanda could have done more to help people in the world.

If Black Panther movie is racist, then you could argue that Captain America:The First Avenger is racist because they were fighting against literal Nazis.

Agreed. There's no gravity to losing King T'Chaka, no sympathy for a brand new character to the MCU of T'Challa.
