Finally saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind

I had never really focused on seeing it because I had seen a portion of the final scene and that kinda made me feel like I already had the experience of seeing the movie.
I still feel that way. The entire movie was good but the entire movie could also have just been that encounter. Which I guess that’s what Arrival was.
I knew a lot had been borrowed from this movie but I don’t think I quite knew to what extent.
The Dreyfuss family draw was weird.
1. The wife was a huge bitch about a “I refuse to get a job”. Well your husband is up in space now for a long time so you better get a job
2. The way he snapped with the plants. Was a crazy scene. Good but just felt sudden.
The scene of the little kids abduction was horrifying. Absolutely horrifying.
There were certain specific Spielberg shot patterns in this movie he’d go on to recreate later in other movies that were very noticeable. Namely there were a couple of Indiana jones shots like when they were in India.
I feel so bad for the guy who got gassed by the military and missed out on the entire visit

Good movie...my issue with it was pacing. The middle of that movie dragged.

It's a true classic. It may be difficult to apply 2024's view of the world to when this movie came out but when it premiered it was amazing and really had people thinking if we were truly alone in the universe.

FWIW - the house is on AL181, about a mile east of Fairhope.

Oh wow. I think I’ve driven that a couple of times. Never knew that.

My wife's cousin was one of the aliens in the end scene. They were all little kids dressed up as aliens. She reminds me of this every time we see any reference to the movie........

quote:How would you have known how obsessed Dreyfuss' character, Roy, was with the site? The 1st part of the movie shows the way he went from being interested in going back to where he had his encounter the next night, to attending a public meeting, to behavior that scared his family away, to risking his life to get there. His "going crazy" was the best part of the movie to me.

You find out the little boy's mother was obsessing over the location when she talks about drawing pics, when she says she didn't know what was on the other side of what she drew. When the government officials, led by the French guy, who is played by François Truffaut, confront Roy near Devils Tower, he has pics they took from other people who were also obsessing over it.
You also have the story of Truffaut's character and government agencies preparing for the mission. It's not just in the USA, but people around the world know something's going on..

It changed the way I looked at mashed potatoes.

The model they used for the mothership at the end of the movie is at the Dulles Annex of the National Air and Space Museum in DC.

One of my college professors was an extra one it, too. We visited the Devil's Tower a few years ago, and the guide was doing some trivia about the movie so I was able to flex my knowledge of it being shot partially in Mobile.

The whole "abandoning your family" thing is my biggest gripe with the movie. A real POS move.
Otherwise, I love it.

I think I saw that that was Spielberg’s biggest regret in the movie. He said once he became a father, his view on this changed quite a bit

Did you watch the original theatrical version of the director's cut?
For the hype, I think the whole 'see what's inside' bit was a swing and a miss. Best to just leave it hidden and up to the viewer's imagination. oh well.

I saw the theatrical release because that was free

More of inferring than anything else. Blond woman runs screaming when child emerges. You can pretty much infer what happened. Richard Dreyfus hiding from the government you can infer he’s some sort of “doesn’t belong.”
I kinda was able to surprisingly put together a fair amount of the movie on the last scene

to attending a public meeting,
my favorite go-to when discussing conspiracy theories
Here is the average joe, family man, who's passion and trustworthiness has the room without an answer...then..."I saw Big Foot once..", everyone laughs and the meeting adjourns.
Big Foot Man, up there with Rose and Jenny in my book.

I always thought that CEotTK was slightly overhyped. I saw it on it's original release a couple of times, so I enjoyed it enough. The special effects were groundbreaking, but I still think the storytelling aspect is off target.
From his early "hits", Duel, Jaws, Indiana Jones were near-perfect to me. But CEotTK, ET, Poltergeist... lacking slightly when it came to story.
For me, anyway.

That's a fantastic movie in every sense from acting to musical score.

After clicking this thread I had the movie Fire In The Sky pop up in social media. Had forgotten about that one.
