So, I sat with my 16 year old son and introduced him to this classic. It’s been years since I’d actually watched it and one thing in particular puzzled me. When Barb and Adam first discover the Beetlejuice ad in the handbook, it’s spelled “Betelgeuse”. Adam even pronounces it as it’s spelled, but when Barb summons him, she pronounces it as “Beetlejuice”. How did she know how to pronounce his name correctly to summon him?

It may be spelled funny but phonetically it’s supposed to sound like ‘Beetlejuice’

I always assumed it was a play on the Red Giant Betelgeuse. I remember it being called Beetlejuice back in the 80s before this movie. I never really researched to see if there was a connection.

Betelgeuse
this is his name and how it's spelled

Beetlejuice is just how it sounds and they made it the title of the movie so people pronounced it correctly

None of that explains what OP described happened in the movie.

I had never seen it before. Crazy for someone born in the early 80s to say, I know.
Watched it last week with my 13 and 11 year old. We were all bored, and didn’t understand what made this a comedy.
I also had the same exact question as the OP. The wife supposedly loved this movie but hadn’t seen it in 20 years, and she too said she found it not entertaining this go round.

I appreciate its originality, but it’s a weird movie that none of us found enjoyable. And it felt like beetlejuice was barely even in the movie.

Didn't the old lady with the hole in her neck tell them how to say it??

They asked about him and she shhh'd em..

I'm not sure...

Edit:

We watched the original with the expectation we’d go watch the new one in theaters. Not going to happen as no one of us want to see it after watching the first.

Much different story after I showed the kids the original Top Gun, and they loved the new one too.

Because he isn't, which actually makes it better. He's the enigmatic presence that's always lurking in the background of the story, waiting for someone desperate enough to call on him.

It builds the suspense for when and why we might see him, and what will happen when we do.

If this was pronounced the way it’s spelled it’d be cooler

You’ll enjoy the second one much more.

I like the first one but I enjoyed the second much more. Pretty all over the place.

He also showed that he pronounces words incorrectly at times. He mispronounced the name of their book once they discovered it.

Maybe Barb knew the correct pronunciation of Betelgeuse is Beetlejuice and Adam did not??

Didn’t he say that he can’t say it - she has to say it?

I thought he pointed to a huge beetle and she said Beetle and then he pointed to orange juice and she said juice? Am I thinking of another part in the movie?
