It toes the line perfectly of being a genuine love letter to Star Trek while also relentlessly making fun of it the entire time. Unironically great movie.

I’ve never seen any Star Trek movies or a single episode of the show, but Galaxy Quest is awesome.

I miss the parody genre (both more subtle parodies like this, and more over-the-top parodies like Airplane! and Scary Movie). I think the oversaturation of them after the success of the Scary Movie franchise kind of killed it (aside from Not Another Teen Movie and the aforementioned Scary Movie list, most of them were legitimately horrible).

A genuine love-letter + parody rarely works like Galaxy Quest did, because it relies on both the jokes hitting just right as well as the writer having a very deep understanding of the source material and a deep love of it too.

Shaun of the Dead is one of my favorite types of these movies.

Absolutely.

Hot Fuzz is an absolute love letter and parody of buddy cop movies. Another great one.

I don't think it is hidden. I think it is universally well received.

When it came out i dont think it was a huge success that everyone was talking about. It wasnt given a big marketing push and it doesnt get played on basic cable a lot (to my knowledge).

But, IYKYK. It's really good. But i think a lot of people dont know about it.

I also recommend The Orville if you like comedy mixed in with space adventures. I know Seth Macfarlane rubs some people the wrong way, but The Orville is a fun love letter to Star Trek as well.

I enjoyed The Orville. There is some wokeness in it, but it isn't really over the top crazy. It is worth a watch if you like sci fi.

The Orville is terrific and S4 production begins in a few months.

The "woke" part is awesome, who doesn't want to see the Moclan mating ritual of two naked alien dudes playing capture the mate.

Watching on Pluto now…this movie has so many funny lines. What a great movie.

“Did any of you even WATCH the show?”

“Miners not minors”

“I see you managed to get your shirt off”
