I knew it

I watched One Battle After Another and now HBO is all "oh well we bet you'll love a sappy gay sex-filled hockey drama that has no relation to anything you find entertaining or real life in general"

It is a well written show. Yes, that first episode had a lot of...you know, but it seems like the writers actually know hockey. It feels a bit elevated for what could be looked at as just smut. I could definitely with seeing less blowjobs, though

Man, I teared up during that speaking Russian on the phone scene. It was incredibly acted.
Hard to believe those 2 actors are completely straight.
I know they're actors, they're being paid, but how many 100% straight men can have intense sex scenes like that?

Well, unfortunately they’re the audience it was meant for. Sexual orientation as a central dynamic of a story is not interesting nor original. It’s lazy and repetitive. Highlighting it serves an agenda most don’t care for. Not to say there isn’t good acting or writing involved, but the fatigue is evident.

In the context of professional athletes, there hasn’t been a ton of shows/movies covering this subject matter. Add to the fact that the two main characters were drafted 1 & 2 and were considered the two biggest rivals in the sport, it’s a pretty unique story.

I guess that's why it's STILL the #1 show on HBO Max.

It's astonishing really. The 2 leads are ridiculous. I almost fell out of my chair when I found out the guy who plays Ilya Rozanov is a dude from West Texas and not actually Russian.

Same. I didn’t believe it at first. I was totally convinced he was actually Russian lol

What will Season 2 be about? The same characters or new storylines?

I think they said season 1 was more about their internal struggles while season 2 is more external. Makes sense given how season 1 ended.

Are the same characters in all of the books in the series? I didn’t realize there are like six of them.

I think so, but not 100% certain. I believe Season 1 took a little from several books, not just the one titled “Heated Rivalry.” The Kip/Scott episode for example was taken from one of the other books.

The first book is Game Changers or Gamechanger? As I understand it that's the Scott/Kipp story. The second book is Heated Rivalry and focuses on Shane/Ilya. I'm assuming though they intertwine at least some since they live in the same timeline. I don't know about the subsequent books, but I know one of the later books is called the Long Game which progresses the Shane/Ilya relationship and that's what I'm assuming Season 2 will be.

I am bumping this. Just finished watching and to reiterate, many will not give it a chance for the content and that’s ok but man am I blown away by the acting. Connor storrie is a name to watch. The Russian monologue was just one of the many facets of phenomenal acting. Worth the watch.

This show is 100% someone's secret fanfic about Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. It's even very much in bad fanfic form, at least for the first few episodes; skipping massive amounts of time just to get to the next sex scene. They threw in a bunch of subplots to try to conceal it, but its origins are pretty transparent imo. It takes a very long time for it to feel like an actual story

Anyway, Boots was a better show as a show but Heated Rivalry does achieve its purpose quite well. I did enjoy it, but I can't imagine why this show has mass appeal beyond gays
