Lake Travis in Austin is a man made lake. They damned up a river and flooded the valley. It’s pretty deep at the damn so it’s the site a lot of SCUBA shops use for checkout dives.

I’ve been told someone carved a shark out of a big tree trunk and anchored it about 6 feet off the bottom. The water is just murky enough to make it hard to see until you’re pretty close.

Even though it’s fresh water and sharks are salt water creatures, it still scares the shite out of people.

I need to go dive the damn and see if it’s true.

The book was good. The movie was great! All these years later jump scares still happen. CGI would not have improved the raw physical terror one bit; in fact it might have brought a great movie down to a ho-hum rewatch.

Crazy the widespread societal impact that film had. And still does.

I don't think any other even really comes close honestly.

And yes it's my favorite movie of all time and IMO the most pure example of how much a movie can immerse us into its world. When I moved to Florida 20 years ago I took up surfing. I would paddle out of the water like a madman when I'd see a 3-4 foot shark because of this movie.

I haven’t bought a Lego set for myself in probably 30 years.

I think I need this.

When Hooper is diving and investigating the boat wreck and the dude's head floats out is a jump scare. Also, when Brody is chumming the water and Bruce pops his head out. The first amounted to nothing and was well done and added to the movie. The second? Not so much but got the you need a bigger boat line.

OK, I forgot about the Ben Gardner (the dead fisherman) scene, that is a jump scare. The other scares are not jump scares. People play fast and loose with the term "jump scare" these days. Your second example is borderline jump scare.

Brody chumming and the shark pops up right behind him is a jump scare the first time you see it.

I would argue it's the first time you get a good look at the shark, and it's jaw dropping and scary, and unexpected, it's barely, just barely a jump scare. When I think jump scare, it's accompanied by a scream or loud music/sound, to make you jump out of your seat, so to speak. That scene simply has the shark poke his head out of the water. Scary, terrifying, great scene, I still don't consider it a jump scare.

My original point is that's it's not a movie with a bunch of jump scares like the other guy said. It has 1.5 jump scares.

Spielberg talked about this scene. Up until then every shark scene had the “Da duh” music. Then out of nowhere the shark appears with no warning or music. Genius filmmaking.

I think Ben Gardner scene is jaws is the most effective jump scare in history.

Watching for like the 100th time right now on SYFY.

Mayor Vaughn is one of the most underrated pieces of shite on movie history.

Just rewatched it last night, last time was when my better half and I took kids to universal studios in Orlando. Had to prep them ahead of time. Still fricking great. Especially the story about the uss Indianapolis. Hard to believe that someone of Brody’s age wouldn’t had known about the Indianapolis.

I didn't take it as him not knowing about it.
just maybe wanting to hear the real story from someone who was there.
