I just wanted to see what people thought of the best "hero" out there.
I am probably always going to vote for James Bond. He has the swag, the toys, the comedy, and the results. Another great hero/cop is Sam Gerard in the Fugitive and US Marshalls.
Honorable mention
Virgil Tibbs In the Heat of the Night (movie)
Bud White (L.A. Confidential)

It's always going to be a tie between John McClain/Martin Riggs.

Old school Columbo was sneaky good. A schlubby appearance with a ratty old car and unimposing style unraveling the criminals who were almost perfect.
Philip Seymour Hoffman playing a CIA spook in Charlie Wilson's War was especially funny and sharp. He inhabited the grey morality and neurosis of the real person the character was based upon.

I think you have to add a /adventurer to your category because Indiana Jones has to be in the discussion. Yeah, we're only talking about 3 films and series about his youth for big projects, compared to 2 dozen or whatever Bond films, but still.
I think there could be a comparable thread with "anti-hero" - notably Snake Plissken.
On the other hand, you probably nailed it right off:
Just has so much going for him, at least the classic era.
