To what end? What will Trump give Paramount in return?

The same reason that they settled the ridiculous 60 Minutes lawsuit. The Skydance merger doesn’t finalize before October. The FCC can step in at any time and squash it. Look for The Daily Show to suddenly be “too expensive” as well.

Jon Stewart is extremely bitter. as mentioned above, even as a conservative in the 00s i could laugh, but he's just a bitter old man just like Colbert at this point.

Yep. I was more right wing in 2004 than I am in 2025 and I could laugh uproariously at the election coverage Stewart and Colbert were doing on The Daily Show in those days. Both men seem so hateful and bitter in the present day.

Colbert will have a new show on a new network as soon as he’s allowed to. If he wants that, of course. I also don’t think people watch these shows in 2025 like our parents did. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Late Show’s cancellation is a harbinger of things to come.

The left has become so preachy and performative that most 'normal' people (even some left of center themselves) don't want to watch stuff like this.

The formula is so easy. Have a witty, likable host. Interview interesting people. Have interesting bands on. Cover a few stories that are 80-20 or 90-10 issues instead of polarizing. Profit.

Good riddance. I tried watching it the first week long before he turned so liberal. Now if they’d cancel that crybaby on ABC. And I don’t care if you’re liberal or conservative, just don’t push either side down my throat.

Late night shows used to have a sprinkling of making fun of the President, then on to other stuff. But every damn show wants to be political. If folks want that, switch to one of the “news” stations. Both sides have their own network(s).

I’m usually streaming a series and forget to watch actual TV anymore anyway.

only time I ever found him funny was on Strangers with Candy

What a great show. I remember finding it on Comedy Central and thinking how unique it was. 1999 was a sea change in television as it was the same year The Sopranos, Futurama, and Freaks and Geaks started too. Colbert's gay relationship with Geoffrey Jellineck was hilarious. Amy Sedaris is hilarious.

Funniest late night show in television history. I was a religious viewer.

If a network had secured him and Conan in back-to-back time slots they would have had me turned in permanently until they retired.

Everybody is, on both sides.

We lost the ability to laugh at ourselves and it shows.

He was also way too weird (and good) for the prime late spot in CBS, with their ancient viewership.

A big reason why CBS didn’t give him Dave’s show. And why Conan didn’t work out on the Tonight show.

Dave was the only one out of those three who was able to make the transition from 12:35 pm to 11:35 pm ET. And even Dave became last in the ratings after the late 90s. I was always a Dave guy. I loved his anti-establishment and anti-corporate leadership and irreverent style. But a big reason why NBC screwed him and gave the Tonight Show to Jay Leno the yes man.

The blurb I heard on the news (Fox so....) this morning driving into work was that the final straw was an on air comment Colbert made about CBS execs and the "big beautiful bribe they took from Trump".

Boy I’m old enough to remember when right wingers and MAGA sycophants whined and complained about being banned from Facebook and Twitter and how that violated free speech
Remember this when the next Democratic POTUS is demanding something be canceled for “wrong” political views.

Oh and before the Magatards come with comments about me being “mad” about this being canceled. I’ve never watched his show and generally think Colbert is a tool, and maybe the show is being cancelled for monetary reasons but it looks bad after Paramount caved in the ridiculous lawsuit. It’s called standards, I’m for free speech, for everyone not just “my side”, if you only support things for “your side” then when”their side” is in power again they will use it against you. It’s

I was excited when they named Colbert as Letterman's replacement, but the smarminess of his Colbert Report character turned out to be an extension of his true personality. He comes across as thinking that he's the smartest man in the room, which never worked for me in a talk show setting. (And not just "smartest" when it comes to politics. It leaked over into discussions of pop culture with his guests.) It was a huge letdown. I don't care that he calls out Trump on a regular basis, I just want an entertaining show no matter the subject matter.

As a non-watcher when it comes to The Late Show, I don't really have skin in this particular game. But on the larger topic of a network cancelling shows and paying off the President so that they can go about their business, we all lose.

Be prepared for the WAFB 10pm news to soon be followed by some toothless, innocuous, cheap game show.
