I’ve been recently doing a deep dive into his catalog and goddamn is he good. He is truly one of the best songwriters/storytellers of all time. His music is just so comforting and reminds of my childhood. It’s such a damn shame he died so early. Yesterday was also the 50th anniversary of his death RIP.

"Operator" was a hell of a song, as well as "I've Got A Name".

The stories he told in his songs remind me of Ronnie Van Zant....simple and to the point.

Most of my favorites of his aren’t even the ones he’s known for by most.

Next Time, This Time
Lover’s Cross
It doesn’t have to be that way
Walking back to Georgia

He was a genius

I lived in Natchitoches and went to the scene of the crash. It was very sad. He and his people were harassed by local cops(suspicion of pot), and they rushed their departure.

Operator

Maury Muehleisen was a big part of Croce's success. They complimented each other very well.

Professor of Rock focused on the story of Croce and the song Time in a Bottle, and it covers the lead up to his death. It's a very good video, and he discusses how personal that song was to him. Croce wrote it for his wife and child, and he planned to retire from music to dedicate his time to them.

Then the plane crash happened. It's such a truly sad story, and that song resonates even more with me now after watching this video a while back.

Bad, Bad Leroy Brown and You Don't Mess Around With Jim are the same song.

But I do love Jim Croce.

You can't mention Jim Croce without including his 'one man band', Maury Muehleisen.

quote:

Maurice T. Muehleisen (January 14, 1949 – September 20, 1973) was an American musician, songwriter, and artist best known for his studio work, live accompaniment, and impact on the music of Jim Croce. Muehleisen died in the same plane crash that killed Croce.

A favorite of mine. Grew up on his tunes. He is still one of my favorite musicians.

Don't blame the cops for this crash that was due completly to pilot error.

quote:

An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) named the probable cause as the pilot's failure to see the obstruction due to physical impairment and because fog reduced his vision. The 57-year-old Elliott suffered from severe coronary artery disease and had run three miles to the airport from a motel. He had an ATP certificate, 14,290 hours total flight time, and 2,190 hours in the Beech 18 type airplane.[27] A later investigation placed the sole blame on pilot error because of his downwind takeoff into a "black hole" of severe darkness, limiting his use of visual references.[28]

The pilot should not have had a valid medical certificate.

My favorite. I listened to it all of the time when I was realizing I had to split from my first wife.

Not to quibble, but if you’ve got the runway you need, you are within weight and balance, and you climb out like you should, the blackness shouldn’t matter. You can rarely see what you are flying into when you do a night takeoff from a rural runway.

The downwind could matter if the wind was significant.

Jim Croce was my dad's jam so it reminds of being a wee lad in the mid 70's.

You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger
And you don't mess around with Jim
