I bet he’s retiring. May take a year off and they’ll bring him on as a coach.

She has no desire to build more wealth or hold onto her current level of wealth. She’s 76 and is giving it all away when she dies. She will pay the tax when it is warranted.

You don’t go into the tax for a team that has not made the playoffs three out of four years and the one year basically backed into it with a losing record b/c the west was bad due to injuries that one off year. She’s absolutely making the right call, especially for a small market team…..
If I was the owner, Griff would have the same mandate…

Bad business to throw more money in a situation that isn't guaranteed to make you money back

It's the 15th spot on the roster, whoever that person is, they cannot play, they are not a valid rotation player.
15th is not in the 8 man playoff rotation. true.
but on many teams he can play a role to fill in when necessary. maybe great ft shooter or a defender.
don't just waste it.

Luxury Tax Bill
1. Warriors - $167,570,675
2. Clippers- $108,914,772
3. Suns- $69,026,702
4. Heat- $23,926,550
5. Bucks- $22,055,411
6. Celtics- $21,662,818
7. Nuggets- $11,590,473
8. Pelicans- $2,512,767
9-30. $0
We still have 2 roster spots open. Can you stop with the “pay the tax crap”. We have to see what the team that we traded for a year ago can do together.
Every single one of these teams has been to a championship game the last few years.
We didn’t make the playoffs last year.

How are we going to get under?
They can trade Lewis. But it would probably cost us a pick, then we'd have 3 roster spots to fill with only 3M in space. That doesn't seem smart.
It seems like we are going to be a tax team this year..

We can trade Kira and would have about 4.1mil available. Easily could add another vet min and a rookie contact. That would put us at 14players and 0 cap space.

Lewis is at 5.7M, we are currently 2.5M over. That leaves 3.2M, if we can find a team to take him, which I kind of doubt.
Is Matkovic going to cost less than 3M? That would be one deal.
The NBA minimum deal for a player with 2 years of service is over 2M (going up with each year in the league). So that isn't cheap either.
I don't see a way to avoid the tax this year unless we dump some people..

The tax doesn’t accrue until later in the season but, yeah, it looks like we are there.
From what I’m seeing on Spotrac, we’re over and that isn’t counting Alvarado’s deal, which is about $1.8m non-guaranteed. No fricking way we dump him for cap purposes.

I swear that a few years ago they changed the rules so your taxable salary is what you actually paid out over the course of the year, not what your salary looked like on the last day of the season. Am I making that up? I don't think I am but I can't find it.

He deserves the T-Spoon treatment. Clearly failed as our “vet leader.” Dude has been stealing from the Pels past two seasons.

I'll have to look into it further, but I also thought that with the new CBA, your tax bill was calculated at the beginning of the season, rather than the end. I know that they changed the salary floor to the beginning of the season rather than the end.

You are correct.
What it means is “what we have on the books now will put us over, but we can dump salary if we are clearly faltering to end up below the line.”
In this case, it means dumping Kira for sure and possibly other pieces like Naji who won’t be coming back anyway.

Our number on Sportrac ($166,969,178) is already including Alvarado's $1.8M.
We're about $1.657M over the tax line right now.

Kira is getting dumped, I think the only question is whether its now or at the trade deadline.

Don't believe the tax will be paid because Mrs. Benson wants to give back to the fans. Believe the tax will be paid if the Pels become a legit contender because winning championships and having and MVP player is good for business, and the NBA has changed league economics enough that every team can afford to make that investment if the opportunity presents itself.

They can trade Lewis once things calm down a bit into someone's space and create a TP, it probably wouldn't take much.
You sign Liddell and another minimum contract and you're at 14 and under the tax. You can then fill it late in the season with one of your two ways if you want.
