Looking at some center options around the league

I'm choosing to not look at contract and salary when doing this, but focusing on their on-court impact. From the center position, what this team needs most is rim protection, PnR defense, rebounding, and availability. I'm looking at their average # of games played over the last 5 seasons, field goal % on defended shots at the rim, points per possession when guarding pick and roll, and contest rebound percentage (the percentage of rebounds the player collects while an opponent is within 3.5 feet of the rebounder).
I'm going to throw out some names that have been discussed either as potential trade options or through FA. Obviously these stats don't tell the full story about these players, but I picked the stats that I believe best quantify the qualities discussed above.
To start, Jonas:
Average games played over the last 5 years - 66.8
DFG% at rim - 67.3%
PPP in the PnR - 0.94
Contested RB% - 43.7%
Zach Collins:
Average games played over the last 5 years - 49 (did miss the entire season in 20-21 from an ankle injury which I didn't count
DFG% at rim - 54.9%
PPP in the PnR - 0.94
Contested RB% - 46.1%
Mitchell Robinson:
Average games played over the last 5 years - 57.8
DFG% at rim - 58.1%
PPP in the PnR - 1.04
Contested RB% - 60.4%
Daniel Gafford:
Average games played over the last 5 years - 61.7 (4 seasons)
DFG% at rim - 54.3%
PPP in the PnR - 1.07
Contested RB% - 49.4%
Jakob Peoltl:
Average games played over the last 5 years - 70.4
DFG% at rim - 62.6%
PPP in the PnR - 1.24
Contested RB% - 54.9%
Jarret Allen:
Average games played over the last 5 years - 67.4
DFG% at rim - 54.1%
PPP in the PnR - 1.16
Contested RB% - 47.6%
Myles Turner:
Average games played over the last 5 years - 57.4
DFG% at rim - 56.3%
PPP in the PnR - 0.91
Contested RB% - 41.6%
Mason Plumlee:
Average games played over the last 5 years - 70.2
DFG% at rim - 64.1%
PPP in the PnR - 1.03
Contested RB% - 45.3%
Clint Capela:
Average games played over the last 5 years - 61.6
DFG% at rim - 59.6%
PPP in the PnR - 0.94
Contested RB% - 49.8%
(For fun) Zion:
Average games played over the last 5 years - 38, lol (over his 4 seasons and not including the entire season he missed)
DFG% at rim - 71.8%
PPP in the PnR - 0.67 (really low opportunities)
Contested RB% - 39.6%
Rankings
Availability:
1. Jakob Poeltl
2. Mason Plumlee
3. Jonas
4. Jarret Allen
5. Daniel Gafford
Rim Protection:
1. Jarret Allen
2. Daniel Gafford
3. Zach Collins
4. Myles Turner
5. Mitchel Robinson
PnR Defender (not including Zion):
1. Myles Turner
Tied for 2. Clint Capela
Tied for 2. Jonas
Tied for 2. Zach Collins
5. Mason Plumlee
Rebounding:
1. Mitchell Robinson
2. Jakob Poeltl
3. Clint Capela
4. Daniel Gafford
5. Jarret Allen
At this point Jarret Allen would be my target, with Gafford as a second and more realistic option. I may have messed up somewhere, I should be doing other things, lol.

Another offseason, another summer of me wanting to somehow trade Jonas for Myles Turner. Surely the 4th time’s a charm

Griff passed on multiple cheap options at C in the draft last year to draft a PG who can't shoot when we already had BI, Zion, CJ and Jose as ball handlers on the roster. Now we are desperate for rim protection. Sigh.

Weighing all of the cap implications and acquisition costs, I'm honestly leaning towards Zach Collins as my #1 option.
Especially if we don't extend Herb this offseason, I think adding Collins allows us flexibility to get the full MLE offered. So it's not just Collins you'd get, you now can play the market for another solid free agent as well.
Obviously the injury concerns are there but Collins played 63 games last season and averaged 18/10/5 per 36.

Collins is always injured. He'll fit right in.

Lakers just waived mo bamba. Backup centers can be had for free

Do you not remember what Chris Paul did to us in the playoffs? Not like his perfect fg% didn’t mean anything. We were also a terrible perimeter defense. I like Duren and Kessler, but no way we would’ve chosen them over DD at that time. Plus DD is known for his passing/playmaking in G-League too, so hopefully we can see more of that. He was projected to be drafted before us.
Anyone can say “oh we can draft this and that” this time but I bet your arse you didn’t say that when it was draft day last year.

we?
I was not for the next tall AUSSIE passer who can't shoot.
when you look at the availability based on the actual choices there's not much there. so the choice is understandable.
I/we missed on mathurin who went next after d daniels.
Kessler went #22.
Roddy at #23 is apparently another late first memphis keeper. he would be redrafted top 10. pretty nice for rookie season.
with any improvement at all he will be the one that got away.
my all 2022 pels draft misses.
1. mathurin
2. Kessler.
3. Roddy
d d is a reach.
pels recent reaches
1. hayes
2. kira
3. Daniels
naw can play. he's ok for mid round. I liked Clarke better but Clarke can't play 82 if his life depended on it.

You will be wrong about this within a couple years. Dude is no where near Kira or Jax level. He will be one of the better defensive wings in the league soon enough.

We drafted a project level player with some unique skills at his size that we knew will take some time to develop. At least give him 3 years to see what he looks like before calling him things like reach or if we should have gone another direction. His defense is already high level and has shown glimpses of a shutdown defender who can guard 1-4. Once his offense comes around, people are going to change their tune.

I admit I'm taken aback by the requirement to give him 3 years to develop.

Alright, I've changed my mind--all in on Branham or Duren.
on 5/17/22 at 8:36 pm
Dyson Daniels/Jalen Duren Kind of leaning Duren--maybe even Mark Williams....

Mathurin went 6th to the Pacers, not sure how we missed on a guy taken 2 picks before us

What lol, Roddy was mediocre as a rookie with multiple seasons of college ball under his belt. His shooting splits were marginally better than Dyson’s and Dyson is already a great defender
I’d 100% rather have Dyson than David Roddy

$20M?
$12M?
$7.7M?
they all seem to have similar defensive stats we are looking for in regards to rim protection and guarding the PnR.
I don't think Collins is a starter, but I think it's just dumb if we don't try to get him over here. i think Gafford and Allen are too skinny to play any type of defense against Jokic.
JV to Spurs, Kira to Raptors, Collins/Koloko/Otto Porter to Pels.
Collins/Nance/Koloko/Zeller are your 5's. I think thats more than enough at that position.

Collins and Allen are more comparable. I think Collins can play stronger.
Gafford is not in their league.
I'm strictly thinking about playing against Jokic when i think of who i want as the 5 on this team.
And to be honest, i want JV, and then i want a Nance or a Collins behind him with another young energy big behind them, not some shitty vet who isnt' any good.

Trying to stop Jokic is futile.
Stop everyone else. The only time Denver looks mortal is when Jokic has to score 50. Plus he'll wear down having to do all the heavy lifting every time and not just standing there dropping dimes.
You can't stop guys like Jokic, Curry, etc. and trying to find someone who can is a pointless endeavor.
To beat Denver you have to outscore them.
