Summer League MVP

So how bad did Griff screwup again striking out on an easy slow pitch right over the plate? And before you say blah it’s summer league. Go look at the list of the last ten MVPs. Do you have confidence our pick will ever reach that level?

So who was the summer league mvp?

I mean I agree with you, but should probably name whitmore in your OP

You should get an award for worst off season post. Also bitching about someone who was taken like 6-7 spots later is stupid. While you’re acting like a bitch why not complain that we could have drafted Jokic?

Considering the guy we drafted isn’t projected to crack the rotation this season by this board and Whitmore was projected in the top 10, fills a positional need and has a broader, more expansive skill set than Dawkins, it’s a very valid discussion.

Well, I think he pointed out Whitmore because he was a top 5 talent that fell to us. We, along with several other teams, passed and might end up looking stupid for it.
Have they released the specifics of why he fell? Was it medical, character, both?

You guys need to accept who this front office is and what they are good at and what they are bad at. Whitmore had injury and motor red flags. This team has proven unsuccessful in developing/fixing unmotivated, chronically injured players. On the flip side they have been very successful in developing self motivated players.
I also think many of you are missing the portfolio/quantity strategy that the team is taking. You focus on the high profile misses like Jaxson/NAW while somewhat dismissing/discounting the impact of the low cost wins like Herb, Jose and even Trey. If this team could stay healthy nobody would be complaining because on paper with injuries turned off, they've added a lot of talent since moving on from Davis/Jrue.
Let's not declare this draft a failure based on summer league. And even if Hawkins flames out in the end, this draft class isn't a failure until Landers Nolley and Liam Robbins go down too. I know some of you are laughing heartily at that last sentence, but nobody expected Jose to play anywhere but Birmingham when he was picked up as a UDFA either.

By pretty much every mock draft out there. He was pretty much universally looked at as a guy that would go 8th or 9th. He didn't fall because of his game, he fell because of injury concerns and he bombed interviews at the combine. I had him 5th on my big board, seemed like he was around that 4th-6th range on most big boards.

I agree with all of this. Especially with Landers Nolley and Robbins.

So, nobody that picks players for a team, that has a job on the line?
My point is that we see this every year in all sports. You have can't misses (Lebron, Zion, Wemby?), then you have the Odens, Fultzs, and Aytons (although the book isn't completely out on Ayton yet, but Luka). For every top 3 flop, there is a Steph Curry, 2nd rounder, or undrafted guy that is contributing more.

We won’t know if anybody screwed up until January Christmas, at the earliest.

The most reputable draft guys are getting their information from teams.

Guessing you didn’t post in the draft thread? Quite a few people, me included, said he should have been the pick draft night. So no it’s not stupid.
Passing on Jokic years ago has nothing to do with something that just happened a month ago. Such an idiotic post and correlation to make.

I had him 3rd in the draft and got super geeked when. He dropped.
He's not the best fit for us. But he could have played a ton at the 4 and some 3. Talent wise, it was a no Brainerd

One good draft does not negate a bad one and vice versa. Each can be judged on its own. You hope we have more good than bads, but nobody is perfect..

I would have preferred Whitmore over Hawkins at 14, but it very likely won’t make any difference in our 2023 season.
Whitmore is on the fringes of being in Houston’s rotation this year, and will probably receive plenty of DNP-CDs on a 30ish win team. He played well in summer league when most of the “star” players started sitting out. Let’s take his performance with a grain of salt.

This idea that every year we will hit on our first round pick regardless of what pick we have is dumb. It’s pretty lazy to look at anyone that was drafted after us and say “well player x got picked after and he looks better than who we drafted”. It’s just a dumb, lazy argument only made by cry babies looking for something to complain about.
Show me a team that every single year hits on their outside top 5 draft pick please. It doesn’t happen, especially in the nba. Our roster has several good players we’ve drafted over the past few years, including some 2nd round and non drafted guys.
Sorry to vent, but it’s such a tired dumb argument that only the loud attention seeking minority make. Whitmore had some medical issues that worried a lot of teams, we’ve had lots of injury problems so we didn’t draft him. Rockets decided to take a risk because it was a late round pick and it worked out for them. Doesn’t mean the sky is falling, please find something else to complain about.
