It’s really hard for me to justify 30m for a 2, even if he is elite at that position, and Olave is elite

If you have Olave as an elite #2, then $30 is probably what he’d demand. Higgins is at $28.75; Waddle is at $28.25; DeVontae is at $25M.

What’s interesting is they have Olave on a $15.5M fully guaranteed deal. So is the plan to extend him now so some of that signing bonus hits now? If not, why not wait until TC or midseason?

Because he will likely hold out if not extended.

Then he is done in NOLA.
But he is smarter I think. I see no pompous traits. He has health concerns and he knows the Saints have him the next two years at what?...around 40 mill. Not a lot of leverage in his camp as i can see. But its a crazy world.

I’m not saying you didn’t hear anything but i find it hard to believe the saints have truly dove into the draft just yet. I’m sure they have scouts and may like some players but i find it hard to believe we have any type of draft board yet let alone have any idea what any other team truly likes. What i find hard most to believe is us just handing over 30 mill to Olave without some protections. No team is going to hand him a contract without protections when he was just openly discussing retirement. Do think they need to resign him? Yeah i do. I don’t think he’s an elite level wr2. I think he will explode even more if we get him some help. He was handicapped with a horrible qb in rattler for half the season and still caught 100 passes and 1300 or so yards.

Cam and granderson came in as 43 ends and are still more suited for that position. I thought we would move granderson at the deadline, and he trailed off until the Falcon game. I love Cam on this team and hope he never plays a down for another organization. That’s not so much about production as it is about legacy for me.

They want to get lighter at Edge and heavier at End.

Corner probably behind OL and WR for me… really it’s BPA sans running back and linebacker for me …

IF you give Olave that type of money, i hope there are team options of some sort to get out of it with franchise damage. That is a ton of money for a wr who is always hurt and one concussion away from retirement.

The Love news makes sense, we need him, KC needs him and a OT, Dallas needs him , Downs Delane.

Depending on who is available, hopefully 2 OT , Love and Downs, i have not problem picking up picks and moving dow a few slots.

FOs are working the draft all season and offseason long. The amount of assets dedicated changes, but they are working it all year long.

A shut down corner would have less effect on this team than an elite safety.

We are an off man zone concept. Go watch the 22 footage. That’s what we run. DA ran a press man system. CBs are a premium in his scheme. It’s why we invested so heavily in them.

And Moore’s offense purrs when it has that guy at RB, so I get it. It emphasizes the position, much like our style of D emphasizes Safety play.

It's nothing to do with being pompous. If we wait to offer him an extension he will hold out because that is the smart thing to do business wise.

He isn’t going to risk potentially $50+ mil guaranteed and $30+ mil per year to injury. We are talking at least double his current salary over multiple years. It would be stupid not to hold out if not offered an extension and I would question his intelligence if he didn't.

He has the concussion history, but he isn't "always hurt". He has played 15, 16, 8, and 16 games.

If someone didn't throw him into the line of fire consistently in 2024 we wouldn't even be talking about it.

I forgot to add, apparently the Saints are still stuck on that damn measurable metric, because they are not that keen on Bain. Too light to be an end and too heavy to be on the edge in their 34. They do like Avril Reese.

of course!

I could totally see the Saints pivoting away from maybe one or the toughest guys to block in this draft class. People either love Bain or they don't want anything to do with him.

but acknowledged that an elite safety would unlock this defense.

defenses are using more 3 safety looks but I don't know if Downs lasts until the Saints pick.

He's a good tackler and willing in run support.

goes along with what you were saying about offenses running out of 13 personnel. It puts stress on the DB's coming up in run support. Downs doesn't sound like the type that would be lost in those situautions.

Yep and I’m not mad at him for it. That’s the smart play.

Well that would indeed change everything and make your point...but why is that the case? Olave himself said they had had talks on a extension. Why on earth would anyone think the Saints FO has not discussed a future and a future contract with Olave?

I guess I'm looking at it from the point of view that we need two WRs - a big possession receiver and a good #2.

Everyone seems to agree that Olave is an elite #2, so if you can pair him with a rookie that turns into a solid #1 on a rookie contract, you've got your two WRs for a few years at $30-35m combined.

Whats the alternative? Let him walk and go get AJ Brown at $32m per year and pair him with a rookie to be #2?

Safety isn’t an important position in this league. Name one game changing safety? There isn’t any anymore. The days of ball hawking game changing safeties is damn near gone? Who’s the best safety in the game? Kyle Hamilton? How much does he move the needle? How much does an elite level pass rusher, corner, dt, wr? 10xs more than any safety will.

The poster I was originally replying to asked why we don't wait until mid season.
