1) Was Naroditsky ethnic Russian (going by his name and Russians love of chess)?
2) If the answer to #1 is yes, did he openly oppose Putin’s Ukraine war?

That was all made up. They never actually proved Niemann cheated over the board, just that he had cheated in some online games when he was much younger. Basically Magnus Carlsen was a sore loser.
I’ve been big into chess the past 3 years and I was really shocked to see this news. This is a crazy reminder even when it seems like someone has it all, they have their own demons. Dude was a chess GM, a Stanford graduate, and a successful chess commentator and chess content creator. And he was fairly good looking as far as chess players go. Really sad.
But also my lizard brain wonders if he was speaking out against things he shouldn’t have been? I’ve just become conditioned to not believe the initial story told.

It seems chess, at least at that high a level, has a lot of people with some mental health issues they have to deal with.
The list is long for chess grandmasters who were/are dealing with such issues over their careers and they either wind up walking away from the game, often becoming a recluse or doing harm to themselves because of it.
