I know someone that has an actual hobby/working ranch.
He says it’s the best thing in the world.
In the summer I seriously doubt that. When it’s cold and pleasant I could see it.

first of all wonderful people . Everyone I met
when they were unloading the bags a couple of them made some comments about me and I just said to them look if you're going to talk about me at least use the English words because I know the Spanish words and your puntes for not saying it out loud ,, the girls laughed out loud
Then they quickly learned I grew up in elementary years in a primarily Hispanic neighborhood in Houston
i got old school street thread in the Tex-Mex heartland
Mexicans

Not much other than selling excess feed, that was grown, not bought.
There is a bit of a movement, and growing, to get more producers into regional packing operations. Startup costs are stupid expensive.
There are not many processing options. There are about 5-6 steps that the government can, and is, to an extent, that could help out costs that the retailers are getting away with.
Also, thanks! I'm not in the business but it never goes away. I assume it would be similar to some southern cultures. Born into it.

Go outside at sunrise, work until your dick falls off, come in, drink a fifth, do it again tomorrow. For 50 years.
Report back and let us know how it is.

What's it like to own a ranch? Well, it’s an honor. Wife’s family for 3 generations. Then another farm even further back.
Do y'all still use cowboys to round up the cattle? No. Cowboys are an old tradition that doesn’t make cents. There are smarter ways to move cattle and not stress them out. If they are stressed, they don’t gain as much and hurt profits.
Is it profitable? Yes. We have to be very strict on inputs. Right now working on not feeding hay during the winter and grazing stockpile. We won’t make it this year but every year it improves. Grazing grass is much cheaper than feeding hay.
Do you keep exotics around to make more money or for hunting leases? No. We have old friends of the past that are allowed to hunt for mechanic work, welding, other odd jobs which works out.
Did you inherit it or did you buy it as an investment? Wife inherited. Being paid off is a huge blessing. There are still people out there who are buying and still making money on livestock. They aren’t millionaires either, but I respect the hell out of them.
Do y'all sell 1/2 a cow or a 1/4 cow or "humanely slaughtered" beef to the hipsters to up your margins? We do
Do you love it? Absolutely. We work all the time. The thing is no one is our boss and reporting to no one but yourself. We have the same outlook for the farm, so we don’t fight over goals or definitions of success. Really just looking at increasing the heard size but being extremely picky on who we are keeping. We may introduce some south poll bulls when the prices go down.

Would just like to add, since I already posted in this thread, that the use of ranch and farm, to some, might be interchangeable. Not correct.
Ranches are occupied by grazing animals. Sheep and cattle, in the USA. Farms generally operate off of stationary livestock. Pigs! Or growing crops in the same plot, year over year. Potato farmers.
While some ranches have farm characteristics, no farm carries ranching characteristics.

shite ton of responsibility.

Only when working them, but cattle don't require much upkeep aside from regular monitoring for health/potential calving problems and feeding in winter when grass is dead. The biggest pain in the arse is dealing with them getting out of fences

Oil and soon to be lithium money

Inherit

This a serious question?

Considering developing it tbh. It's located on the edge of the city limits of a decent sized city in Texas and it's best use is now CRE/mixed use/subdivisions. 2 heavily traveled highways and sewer lines run through the middle of it now thanks to eminent domain
The coolest part is it's an urban ranch surrounded by neighborhoods/development, yet dozens of coyotes, several wild boar, 4 bald eagles(has 25 acre lake), etc live on it

No but we do have some rules like we don’t sell to feed lots.
———————————————————-
Can you expand on the reasoning for this? Do you send them to the feedlot or sell after weaning?
