re: Bulldogs…what’s the point of these animals?

Is a pug not an offshoot of a bulldog?
But I agree, they’re also worthless animals.
I'm not a dogologist but they have the same scrunched nose. Had a cousin that had a few pugs and the damn things were born to not breathe very well. One of their tongues was too long to keep in its mouth. Dumbest dogs I've ever seen.

So would most of you.

I need to know that breeder!

French bulldogs are some cute little bastards.

Bulldogs were quite literally used against bulls.
Bull baiting was outlawed in england and the dogs were brought to the US to round up wild bulls.

Whats that gross shite that grows under their tails? They are some nasty mofos, and they smell horrible.

They are so ugly they are cute.

They look like large slugs and seem to be suffering just to breath and stay alive.

We're a bulldog family. Had two English Bulldogs and two French. Two more Frenchies in my family as well.
Both are pretty incredible breeds. So much personality. I'd love another English but their lifespan just isn't long enough. My boy died at 8 and our girl at 6. Our girl Frenchie is about to be 10 and we don't have much time left with her. She has a brain tumor. She was in the top 10% of her breed as far as health goes and would have lived longer than most but she got this freaking tumor
Our boy Frenchie is four and has been very healthy outside of his stomach issues.

we could probably say the same thing about you.

Aren't they a wealthy status symbol? For people with extra money to spend on their ridiculous bills and to keep them alive. I'd compare them to that ducttape banana sold for 6.2 million. You feel bad even playing with them because they look like they'll die.

Our dog is certainly an outlier for the breed. Most EB's don't make it past 10 or so. Ours breathes fine, and doesn't slobber. He does have bad hips making it hard for him to get up and down. His hearing is starting to go as well, I doubt he makes it to 14.
When he was younger he tore an ACL because he was jumping up trying to bite a low branch in a tree and landed funny. We shelled out $2500 to fix him up. He was probably 6-7 years old and we knew he had plenty of time in front of him, so we went ahead with the surgery.
He is an awesome dog, he is very chill. Mostly lays around all day and only gets excited when my wife or I get home from work, or when it is time to eat. I probably have hundreds of pictures on my phone of him just laying around with a hilarious expression on his face. I've owned labs and goldens, but never have I seen a breed with such a funny personality. It is hard to describe but I love that little bastard.

Consider the bulldog. A grotesque monstrosity born of relentless inbreeding. Riddled with sinusitis, crippled by joint pain. Chronically flatulent. A kindly pet, or humanity's cruelest mistake?

quote:Yeah, my folks had some. Mom had a thing for smooshed snouts, so she had Persian cats, Boxers, Bulldogs, and Pugs over the years.
Don't they have a sh*t ton of hereditary health issues and breathing problems? That's probably what he's talking about.
The Boxers were incredibly athletic, smart, gentle and good natured dogs. Everyone loved them.
The cats, ... they're cats. Indoor cats usually, not quite as efficient as "regular" cats in terms of hunting things.
The Pugs were actually not too bad, other than being tiny little shite-makers.
The English Bulldogs were completely wracked with health issues and allergies. Take one for a walk in the woods and you worry it may have a heart attack from exertion. At least one was allergic to grass, we had to give it benadryl after being in the yard. One was so allergic to various organic stuff that we used to order Kangaroo jerkey online, as it was the only snack it could tolerate without looking like it would die an hour later.
We had a pool. The Boxers could swim like seals, a couple of the females would jump in on their own and and do laps for the hell of it. One would chase you underwater, playing around. We had them all going off the diving board. If someone was in the pool, any of the ones we had would always jump in to play with you. They were tall enough that they'd stand on their hind legs in the shallow end, and basically walk around like that.
On land, they ran like deer. We'd take them out with 10 speed bikes and they'd run alongside for blocks, usually the teenage humans tiring out before them dogs would. They absolutely loved running with big goofy dog grins. I remember we used to get rabbits for Easter, one got out and one of the boxers literally ran it to death in the back yard. He kept up with it the whole time, doing all the cuts and darting, muzzle right against the rabbit (but didn't grab it or try to kill it). Rabbit finally screamed (I didn't know they could), jumped up in the air and fell down dead. The boxer seemed confused and sad about that, it was just wanting to play. *We obviously tried to save the rabbit when that happened, but once the animals took off nobody could catch either one*.
The Bulldogs swam like sacks of concrete. They weren't buoyant at all, I remember tossing one in to go swimming (early in ownership), and having to go rescue it from the bottom of the deep end.
On land, they'd try to run, they wanted to. But before you got to the end of the driveway, they'd lay down on their side puffing and looking like they were having a heart attack.
It's really a pretty simple concept- they have thick bodies, short stumpy limbs, and misshapen heads. In a human we'd call it Dwarfism, and the worse it is the worse that person's life overall, and shorter life expectancy.
Yet we breed those traits intentionally into dogs; it's a shame.

Our French bulldog is pretty funny, stubborn as shite (as are most puppies) but funny non the less and the kids love her…

Let's be honest the average bulldog today would be a horrible catch dog. I occasionally take my Ridgebacks on hunts with my nephew. They are the bay dogs and his Dogos are the catch dogs. A bulldog would pass the frick out trying to keep up with my Ridgebacks after maybe 2 minutes. The hog would die of boredom before they got there
The guys I hunt with let the bay dogs do their thing and once the pig is bayed, they walk the pitbulls in and turn them loose. But, you're right, they have no stamina at all.
