Was there a piece of legislation enacted which reduced herd sizes?

Of course not. But, frickers read a sensational headline once and now it is the source of all the beef problems.

I wish SFP would chime in because he’s an expert in global beef markets

I agree, baw. Good thing there's sources like this:

Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Average Ground Beef Prices

Up 54.9% since December 2020.

I wonder what percentage of U.S. household incomes have risen by that much since December 2020.

You understand the data they're quoting comes directly from the fricking administration, right? And you can find the same shite reported by dozens of outlets......but......

"Derrrrr......muh CNN!"

I’ve got enough red meat to last until deer and elk season. Hopefully I fill my elk tag, that’ll carry me a year.

Raising cattle isn’t cheap nor easy.
Besides long droughts in many areas, I wonder if the decrease in herd size has to do with a lot of producers who hung over to row crops, mainly corn?
It the last 50 or so years, millions upon millions of acres have been converted from grasslands to corn due to it being beneficial for farmers bottom lines due to the subsidies.
If we have less open grasslands, it would make sense our herd size would fall.

kroger has 18-pack large eggs for $2.99 this week.

Would be all over this. I paid $4.99 for a dozen yesterday. And that is down from $10.99 a dozen at the end of last year.

Paid $4.99/lb for ground beef from the meat case yesterday. That’s down from $5.99 about 6 months ago.

Overall, I’m seeing prices drop on the things buy most.

We do get a lot of our fresh fruit and veggies from a farm just north of us.

Okra is $4/lb. It’s double that in the grocery store.

My niece likes to do pick your own at the farm. It’s a fun family day and less expensive that way.

Not deer but I don’t want to know what elk would be per pound. Not really the point of my going.

Ok. Not doubting your expertise. I’m just an amateur. I understand that from a cow becoming pregnant to putting that beef on the shelf is a 2 year process.

But if feed is cheap why am I paying 13.00 for a 50 lb sack of cracked corn?

$800 elk tag. about $400 in expenses for the trip, hunting public land using gear and what not that i already have and have had for years.
240lbs of deboned meat.

$1200/240lbs = $5/lb

and that's for someone that doesn't live in CO/WY/ID etc. If you live there the elk tags are under $100.

WNBA. K?

As to SPR levels, I was told last administration that was good to drop gas prices. Which is it?

Texas is less hot. So, no global warming. Is this not a good thing? Do we want global warming now?

Because you are a hunter that has disposable income and the distribution chain knows you will pay almost whatever to feed deer. Dry Corn is $4 per bushel (56lbs) at the Port of Houston today.

American food prices are insane. Especially considering our agricultural output and taxpayer subsidies.

The taxpayer subsidies don't do a whole lot for cattle farms. Might get a few thousand dollars back in taxes during a draught year. It's not like farming vegetable produce where they subsidies the whole crop.

Cattle farms have been in decline for 15 years. Midwest draughts culled a ton of beef stock in US a few years ago. As development move toward the country, taxes go up, and farmland just gets sold for profit. You'd have to own 1,000 head of cattle to make what a 30 yr old makes working a job at the plant. There just isn't any money in beef farming considering the amount of work that goes into it. Consumer's best bet is to find a small time cattleman with around 30-50 head that feeds steers out annually and buy a half cow. Typically between $2k-$2,500 per half cow slaughtered, butchered, and vacuum sealed.
