The old airport lounge in Monroe was where it was at in the 90s

It the airport was convenient to access then it was probably used for recreation and for meeting folks for business. A lot of business use to take place in the airports, folks would meet someone flying in, have a meal and then work out some business and then depart back to where they had come from.

The biggest drawback to the new norm is that you can't see off people and hang out with them while they wait for their flight. This used to be a big part of traveling if you had a family they'd come in and wait with you and you got a bit more time before leaving. It was also nice to meet family at the gate too, but usually you just left as you were coming back home.

Lots of love for that place. Even Tech kids went over there.

I was recently told this story... My buddy who went to Tech went over there to the airport bar and got smashed on Long Islands so they summoned some pledges from Ruston to come pick him up.

He wakes up the next morning, killer hangover and no car. Looks for his car at Rabb's and the few other places it could be around Ruston with no luck. 5 days go by and he's about to report it stolen when he sees a pledge who says, "Man, you were fricked up when we had to come get you at the airport in Monroe last week."

It finally clicks, that's where his truck is... 5 days in short term parking.

He said it was over $200 to get it out, which was a bunch of money to a broke college kid in the 90's.

Yes. Flying used to be a lot more expensive, comparatively speaking, so it was a lot more intriguing and/or a bigger curiosity.

My brother used to take my nephew to the airport when the nephew was young. They would sit in the seating areas designed specifically for watching planes arrive and depart and ride the tram between terminals.

For a 5 year old, it was like going to Six Flags.

I prefer the Greyhound bus station for people watching.

In the early days airports wanted non-fliers to come to the bars and restaurants in the terminal. It was a good way to make more money for the airport.

Did you know a pilot by the name of Benny Voss? He was an instructor and designated examiner. I took a few of my checkrides with him. We nicknamed those rides "vossectomies"; tough but fair.

And never in my years would I think so many people would comment about the MLU airport lounge! IIRC they had a really good club sandwich too!

I knew him, he was sort of a dick, I think he took some sort of deal from Royale to look the other way when they got hosed by their DO into buying a bunch of unairworthy planes from Metro Airlines, who then hired him, I think Voss eventually went to work for Royale shortly before they went out of business

ETA: iirc he flew A-37s in the reserves out of BAFB for a while

Don't know about that but back in the 80's-90's Nell's Airport Lounge was one of the best bars in Monroe.

ETA: Second floor of the main "terminal"
I would pay good money for breakfast in the restaurant there or a cheese burger and fries. I worked there for 4 years so my tab at the cafe was about half my check. Always loved the cafe and the lounge. Didnt hang out there too much though except to play some pool, always seemed to have a much older crowd. And hard to pick up chicks in your ramp uniform

I dont recall the bar serving food, but they may have. Frank (I think his name) had an outstanding club.

I'm not fond of spending any more time at the airport than I have to. If I want to see pajamas, I will stay home.

About once every couple months I’ll take my 3 and 5yo to MRY airport and eat burgers ag Woody’s. The menu prices are normal if not lower than other burger joints on the peninsula. And the kid burger is the size of an adult burger. I can order two kid meals and we all three feast and watch planes

true, but you still had to go through security,
Correct, and everyone went thru, but no boarding pass needed. I know that about once or twice a year they sent me down there with a dummy hand grenade in a bag and try to carry it thru security. We could enter the ramp area thru the back of the station of course, but you had to go thru the security deal to go thru the gate.

The FAA security check was pretty bogus, you never carried a bag with you...except that day. They saw you coming from a mile away. I dont know if this was an FAA requirement or an airline one, the grenade had some kind of writing on it and I cant remember what agency it had on it.

The prospect of a long layover in O’Hare (the last flight back to MSY cancelled) in the early ‘80s found me at an airport bar there chatting with a young lady who motivated me to check-in to a hotel there. The something Towers hotel, as I recall.

She claimed to be a local school teacher who said she liked going to the bar at the airport because it was well-lit.

Didn’t care, had sex.

I personally never went to an airport unless I was either traveling via air or picking up or dropping off someone else who was.

Seems like a solid airport with a good bar or restaurant might be a fun place to hang out, people watch, and check out some planes.
