Could some company reinvent the family car to be simple: no electronics, no voice commands. Incorporate the safety physical collision features (the crumple engine compartment and hood, for example)?
Bruh, if full self driving gets to where it likely is going. Odds are the electronics will be mandated because at that point they will will be safer than human driving, with exceptions for particular situations. You're not getting a no electronic civilian vehicle in the future IMO.

Got me to thinking. What would happen if someone was obviously drunk and, not only in their own self driving car, but in the back seat. And the car gets in a wreck or gets pulled over for whatever reason. With the police have a case for DUI?
Yes. DUI laws in many states (including Louisiana) penalize the ability to control a vehicle while impaired, not just actively steering. This includes being able to take it over, which would be the case even if you were in the back seat.

Or even if they were in the driver seat and put it in self driving mode and were just sleeping.
if you are anywhere near your vehicle, driving or not, and intoxicated, you can be charged, it may not stand up but you can be charged, and the expense, hassle, and insurance ramifications are almost the same as if you were convicted

Like that makes a difference
It actually does. Even the cop acknowledged that the laws haven't caught up to the Tesla FSD yet. When the jump to fully unsupervised happens, laws will have to rewritten.
Right now, all you have to do is keep your eyes forward and open and it drives you, and parks you. When it goes unsupervised, you can pass out and it'll take you home safely, assuming you can tell it to take you home and not Taco Bell.

You used to be able to fool the steering wheel sensor with a weight but that doesn’t work with the camera AI now.
You don't need to fool it, it doesn't even check for hands on the wheel anymore.

It's already 10x safe than a human driver. Tesla self driving stats are on the internet for anyone to read.

Just tape the license, registration and proof of insurance on the drivers glass and refuse to open the window at a sobriety check point.
Yeah that’s not how a traffic stop works. Good luck sovereign citizen

May run into trouble with curb cuts, alleys, or driveways but so would a sober teenaged girl.
Nope, not even a little. The newest version parks in driveways, parking spots, etc. No issues at all with any of the above.

do think we are at a point right now where these systems likely could technically drive people to and from most addresses without any input though
It's not technically anymore, they do in actuality. When FSD 14 came out, the manic nature of the older version went away. It drives better and smarter than humans with very few exceptions. They could probably release FSD unsupervised right now but Elon said he wants another 3B or so miles before that happens. The cars have already driven over 7B miles at this point.

I can’t wait for self driving cars that can actually serve as chauffeurs. It will kill Uber
Waymo vehicles can currently serve as chauffeurs. They have already partnered with Uber. In Austin you use Uber to ride Waymo.
Uber may not be going anywhere, just expanding their service.

Now its getting super complicated for things like Waymo's and Tesla taxis. I haven't kept up with what States are doing with that
Do passengers in those have any ability whatsoever to take over any control over the vehicle is some sort of emergency situation?

Right. That’s how they used to do it. Now it’s triggered off the in car video.

Good luck sovereign citizen
The stupidity of relying on theories that are universally rejected by the Courts never ceases to amaze me. Had a guy here who had a pending felony charge that could have been easily resolved. Instead, he goes sovereign citizen, starts filing meritless liens against the Court and the Sheriff. This gets the feds involved and all of a sudden he's in a hill of shite. He ended up committing suicide. Another guy here had a $50 seat belt ticket, went the full sovereign citizen mode. Would not accept a notice of hearing because the "court had no jurisdiction" and would immediately get one day in jail for contempt. He ended up having four contempt findings - four days in jail over an f'in seat belt ticket. The Judge did determine that four days in jail was enough and the case got wrapped up.
I'm sure in some shite towns they get tired of dealing with the obnoxiousness and dismiss the ticket. Terrible approach - encourages more people doing the same. Here, you are likely to end up in jail.

How about the same scenario - - you are in the back seat and drunk and the car drives you home - - BUT, we add in a driver who will operate the vehicle for a reasonable amount of money.
Man - - if we could only create an app for this we could make an UBER amount of money.

You can be drunk in a Waymo.

If she was smart, she makes it a commercial self driving vehicle like a taxi. If I remember right taxis are exempt from DUI laws regarding carrying drunk drivers.

I don't get it either. If you've ever test driven a new Tesla (I have) or ridden in a Cybertaxi (I also have), you'd know that getting a DUI in either of these is not at all about safety. If it was, you'd be given a pat on the back for getting in one drunk, rather than just driving yourself home. Racket is right...

If I'm hammered in the back of a Waymo they better not start handing out DUIs.

I remember when people were hanging fisting dildos off the steering wheel to put pressure on the driver input sensor, then they moved to head tracking, now eye tracking, full head and mouth movement analysis and a rumor that they can tracking breathing rate, slurred speech and other indicators to identify impaired drivers. But in typical Tesla fashion they throw out cray ideas and only a few of them stick.
