In second grade most of the kids got all As.

By 4th grade it was like 3-4 per class.

My kids just finished the school year and all received prestigious awards to go along with their straight A’s.

It’s elementary school. Try not to overthink it

I’ve noticed that my friends kids in public schools all have straight As. Not the same in private

It's much harder nowadays to make straight-As, at least middle/high school. The tests are cold-reads, not simple recall like they were back in the day. You have to actually take what you've learned and apply it to new content you've never seen before.

They have an award ceremony and all the straight A kids make the principal's list. 1st through 6th grades, ~90% of the kids were all As. This is a catholic private school

Maybe it is just our kid's school, but elementary school should not be easy for everyone.
It's not every school. It probably has to do with the principal. My wife works as a classroom coach in elementary schools and talks about this a lot. One school she works with has a liberal/feminist as a principal that almost never disciplines kids behavior or holds them accountable for anything. The other had a more traditional merit based educator and usually failed or held back 6-10 kids per year.

My daughter is in 2nd grade and all but 2 in her class got straight A's. Seems like the other classes in 1-6 had the bulk of the kids with all A's.

I'm confused about what you are saying here. Do you mean classes of ages 1-6 or grades 1-6?

100% true, you were almost onto something.

You almost had me. Kids respond to incentives at a very young age. When there's no incentive, they usually don't put the work in. Can you explain why Zoomers statistically have lower levels of reading and math skills compared to Millennials and Gen X'ers since this whole "new age" education policy has been implemented?

It seems like education has been ruined by partisan "black and white" thinking. You can still hold kids accountable and help them at the same time. Shielding them from any type responsibility is bad for their learning development.

I don’t even remember being graded in that type of scale until middle school.

It was like satisfactory type grades.

I'm not sure you read or understood my post. There is an incentive. The incentive is positive reinforcement of an "A" or "Passing" grade, letting the child know that they're doing what they are supposed to be doing.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't challenge kids that need to be challenged, but we shouldn't be giving an elementary student a C just to try to incentivize them to work harder if they are where they need to be.

The teachers are forced to give kids 2,3,4,etc chances until they make an A. They aren't allowed to give bad grades anymore. Might hurt the kids feeling.
Or maybe they're teaching the kids not to give up, keep trying until they succeed?

Is the point of school to figure out which kids are smart and which are not, or is it to actually teach kids things?

My first B came in maybe 7th grade social studies or some dumb class. I was way ahead of everyone. Eventually got bored. Never had to study and then college came and being smart early screwed me up cause I didn't know how to study.

I still never learned how to study alone and I have a graduate degree

I studied in groups when needed.
