For me the two best I’ve owned are a 1995 F150 with a 300 straight 6 and a 2007 Silverado Classic with 4.2
The classic was a half year model where they used up all the parts they had left. The 5.4 is the generally more sought after than the 4.2 but it has been bullet proof and still purrs like a kitten.
2007 marked the decline as this was when the next gen began. And they were nothing but problems for a long time. It’s not my everyday driver any long but with a battery tender it still cranks up like it is. Makes an excellent leave on the side of the road vehicle for whitewater paddling with extend cab seating and truck racks.
The 300 straight 6 makes a lot of best lists.
Etc - Second F150 to Silverado

1991 Ford Ranger with the 4.0 was a tough little truck.
Hindsight being 20/20, i should have never got rid of it. Would make a great little farm truck these days
I remember i had a buddy with an S-10 and he thought it was the shite. That POS would get stuck 10 feet off the pavement.

Toyota Tacoma’s, I’ve had a 2009, 2019 and now, a 2021, total mileage 419,000 between the three. Basic maintenance, that’s it.

We had just about figured out truck engine reliability until the government (retarded democrats) absolutely fricked it up making manufacturers squeeze out a few more MPG with valve timing gimmicks, dead cylinders, cheap turbos and zero weight oil.
All if this to keep the world from ending over the lie that a half of degree temperature rise would kill us all. ( junk science scams to enrich themselves )

Firstly, Prayers for your father, secondly I love this truck.
I wish they threw these babies back into production.

1992 F-150, had this but with the extended bed and double fuel tanks. Nothing Ford ever produces will ever be as reliable as the straight six motor and transmission combo they put into these. Absolutely the peak of Ford engineering for durability. My dad had this as a daily driver from 93-00, then I bought it from him until 03. We traded it in with 360k miles on it with zero mechanical issues and I have no doubt it's still running today.

‘99-‘07 classic Chevrolet/GMC 4.8,5.3,6.0.
And of course the Toyota.

That’s a beautiful truck.
Even down to the simplicity of the rims, it just looks clean.

Obviously not great for pulling anything. But as far as getting from point A to point B..this right here. Great gas mileage, would run forever, and couldn’t tear it up. My dad’s 92 Toyota is still running. Went through all three of his sons as their first truck.

I've got a 98 Ford Ranger with 166K on it, it was my dad's and he gave it to me. It in damn near mint condition. No rust. Interior is clean. Love that truck.

quote:Its really what the automotive industry needs to get back to - simplicity. These travel ball dad tanks that are out on the roads now are just absurd. In 30 years we've gone from the F-150 being this size to what an F-350 was then. The 92 F-150 is the same size of a modern Ranger now, and the Rangers are just overengineered plastic turbocharged junk.

My favorite is the 1967-72 Fords. Beautiful lines.
They get bulky and top-heavy from 73 on.
I have a soft spot for the mid to late 70s GM squared-off models also.

Truck prices are out of control. But id consider paying them if I was guaranteed 15-20 years of repair free life from a new truck.

The gold standard is prob the 80s Toyota 22r engine. With the 7.3 Ford power stroke following. Both 400k plus.
