I have, at minimum, 6 different mail carriers each month.

If you do this, then where does it end? At what point do you draw the line? I just recently got my family to accept only doing Xmas presents for immediate family and not all ancillary relatives like aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. I can't freaking imagine feeling obligated to tip/get a gift for every random person I'm vaguely familiar with.

This is it...in the past, when mail was used more to send actual letters to one another and not just for bills or junk mail, you often had the same postman for years and years. In places where the postman walked hi route, they would actually get to know the people on their route. These folks were generally tipped at Christmas. It's a custom that has fallen away because we have random folks delivering mail and mostly we don't see the postman at all.
In the city you use to tip the postman and doorman if you had one at Christmas.

I have never heard of this.

Has this ever been a thing? Their government benefits and retirement are my tip to them.

What time of day does the mail come for all the tippers in this thread? My mail is in my box when I get home from work, I have no idea who he/she is that actually does the delivery

Our primary carrier gets a bottle of wine. She loves her job and treats everyone like you’re her only patron. It’s a small token for a job well done.

I would if I knew my main carrier would get it. She is an older lady that works real hard. If I have a heavy package coming in via Amazon I try to help her if possible. At times there are other carriers delivering my mail.

We used to give our old mail carrier something every year. A small gift or a $20 bill. Everyone in the neighborhood liked him, and he was great. Friendly and personable.
Our new guy gets nothing and never will.
He's about the most unfriendly mail carrier I've ever encountered. Possibly a racist. He's had a bad attitude on the rare occasions I have actually talked to him. He won't even wave back when folks wave at him. No one i've talked to likes this guy, and I doubt anyone ever tips him.

Nothing
My mailbox is in a group of 4 down on the corner. I get more of my neighbors mail than my own and on more than one occasion, all 4 addresses worth of mail have been stuffed in one box.

I’m a mail carrier, here’s my take.
I don’t care if I don’t get anything. I appreciate it if I do and I thank the person but it’s not an expectation.
I’m in a small town so I know 95% of the people on my route by first name. I don’t feel that I go above and beyond in my job as much as I am just being me. My brother and I are now raising beef cattle. When one gets butchered I’ll give the stuff not many people want (liver, tongue, heart) to people on my route who do. I’ll invite people from my route over each spring when I’m making maple syrup to hang out, drink beer, and if they show up I’ll drop off a pint or a quart of syrup just as a thanks for stopping by. My wife has a pretty good sourdough business going out of our home. If she has stuff that she needs to unload I’ll drop it off with people on my route free of charge. Typically those folks are elderly or they’ve had some unfortunate circumstances lately. Death of a spouse, medical issue, etc. Id do that just to do it more so than being a mail carrier. I’m not looking for a “tip” when I do that but those are the people who usually give a very nice gift each year.
If you have multiple carriers over the course of a week or two it probably means that your office is short staffed or that you live on an auxiliary route.
Legally we cannot dispose of or destroy “junk” mail. The customer in that case is the person sending it. We have to deliver it. If we destroy it we get fired.
If you receive the wrong person’s mail, does your mailbox have your names clearly listed inside? If carriers are rotating through your route, at most one might know who lives there, who the previous residents were, etc. If misdeliveries are an issue, tag your box with the current names to clear it up. 90% of misdelivered mail can be cleaned up if the current resident’s names are visibly on a tag inside of a mailbox.
