I found a Winnfield HS jacket while an early 70s young kid in a thrift store in Winnfield and wore it as long as I could. I loved that red and white leather thing.

But as a letterman in a class C school they were free

No, I literally am on my little scooter thing with the jacket on. Soaking panties in the process.

$5k for pictures? I know there is more professional pictures that what you take with an iphone, but $5k is insane.

$5k today would have been worth.. What? A little over $2,000 in the mid 1990s. If I would have went to my mom and said "I need $2500 for senior pictures" she would have slapped the shite out of me.

Son didn’t get his name on the back of his (which is a huge add on) like so many because we filled that back up with patches also. 2 sport athlete with multiple state championships. He never put it on but the mission was to make sure it was done right and was a record of accomplishments.
Follow thru with all the applicable patches.

My Dad bought mine for me when I was a Junior. I lettered in three sports. I was on the varsity track team in 7th grade. Never took the thing out of the plastic. I just hung it in the closet.'

Same with my class ring.

I mean, you can buy a real nice camera for that amount...and then have a side hustle taking gender reveal party photos.

Had mine stolen in 1996 and never replaced it. Me and several others had the trench coat version. Paid for the patches but was all under $100. They gave us the jacket.

Ours were free along with the patches. Smaller school so if you played football you got the jackets and patches of lettered at the football award’s banquet. Mine is still at my parents house, never really wore it and never had my patches put on it but my mom still has the patches in her cedar chest. The last time I saw it my niece wore it when we took my brothers boat to look at Christmas lights and looked to be in decent shape.

Back at good ole Captain Shreve in the early 80s, the letter jacket was a big deal. The sleeves were vinyl, not leather. I kept it after high school in a garment bag hanging in the back of the closet. About 10 years ago I decided to take it out and look at it. The sleeves had melted. Green greasy goo everywhere. Nasty. I threw it in the trash.

My oldest kid just ordered one. HFS, seriously? What the hell is typical for this thing thats worn for like a year?

See this is some bullshite. We had to buy my stepsons about 5 years ago. Same high school I went to. When I was there, it was $0. Like what's the point of being awarded the letter if you have to buy the shite. Sure, pay for patches, but the jacket should be covered. Same for my daughter this year. I just don't understand it.

As a dad, I offered them a little less cash to opt out.

Offer them $500 cash to say no

Even in HS I never saw the value of money spent on HS gear.

Mine was probably the best jacket I ever owned. Damn, that thing was warm.
my son wears his when it is in the teens, With shorts of course. Other than that he says it suffocates him.

And yes we had to buy it for like 250 bucks.
