I think that is Bressus’ way of saying “whoops, I was an idiot with my original response.”

There should be locker system where the kids put their cells in at the beginning of the day. (Say home room). And it doesn't open unless admin/teacher approval code.
Or even a step further and restrict cell phones like Marlboros. Get caught once and you get a summons. Caught twice and we sending you the river to Saint James to do a 30 day turn around.

Teachers have to be happy about these state laws. Remove distractions, urge kids to communicate face to face and focus on learning in the classroom. Teachers don't have to waste valuable instruction time policing cellphone usage.

Why? Just banda it's that simple

We didn't even have cell phones. Except for this one kid:

Oklahoma banned cell phones in classrooms this year
I am not sure why they were not always banned in the classroom. No good can come of playing on a phone in the classroom.

When I was in HS, if you got caught with your phone out by the wrong teacher, the office would keep it for X amount of time. If it happened again, I think they kept it for the remainder of the year
That was just scare tactics from the teachers and school admin. They could never keep it for the year or "x amount of time". The most they could ever do was take it away from the student and make their parent come pick it up from the office (plus whatever detention or suspension). Schools could never confiscate a student's possessions and refuse to give it back to a parent.

Our school district did the same. Credit the superintendent's response - "it'll be like when you were in school. Have a problem? Call the office."
It has been a net positive.

Cool, my grandparents used an ice box, shall we continue with more useless anecdotes?
You used a refrigerator in class? I'm not against students having the devices at school. I don't get the push for them to have access and use them during school. What I originally replied to was a question as to what is as ubiquitous as cell phone usage. There were plenty of things we used in place of cell phones before they were ubiquitously used for those purposes. And I couldn't access those in class, so why do kids need to now? I've not heard a good argument any time this comes up (here or anywhere else)

This is, quite literally, the exact opposite of what’s happening

My cell phone was taken away in the 2000s in high school for pulling it out to play snake.

Correct
We have a problem with kids learning and being taught that you do not have to follow laws and rules that you don't agree with and think are useless. Usually by parents and adults that do not follow laws and rules that they don't agree with and think are useless.
Correct
Kids are addicted to cell phones because their parents buy them a smartphone when the kid is in 5th grade or so, or use a cellphone as a "crutch" when their kid acts up or is "bored". Kids are mirroring their parents, for the most part. Adults can't walk into a grocery store/gym/convenience store/DMV/anywhere without having to look at a cellphone.
More laws and rules won't fix this.
Correct
Teachers can be stupid and screw things up, but this is just blaming education for what adults are doing, be it puds, dems, blackies, whities, gays, straights, religious nuts or atheist idiots.

Rob For School Transparency in shambles… he made a Facebook page and launched a school board campaign over reposting Chalmette High fight videos that were sent to him… it was over a personal vendetta he had against the school district when they fired him after being a high-paid IT employee.
He got crushed (of course) after coming off as unhinged in his campaign videos

My sons school (private) they are required to put their phone in a magnetically locked bag.
They put the magnets out at end of day to unlock.
Not supposed to wear smart watches at all.

My daughter has to bring her phone to her 7th hour class first thing in the morning. They put them in a cabinet and get them after class at the end of the day.
They did this last year too. No problems yet that I know of.

But locking them away in a locker teaches kids nothing
It forces decisions. How do I spend my time when my security blanket that I use for hours a day is removed.
Maybe learn to sit and shut up. Maybe learn that I can’t choose every bit of info that I see in a day. Maybe learn how to nap on your desk. I don’t give a shite. But playing Clash Royale all day isn’t part of any curriculum
My son has a school wide cell phone ban. I know for a fact none of em honor it
If you don’t confiscate em there simply isn’t enough time in a day to monitor their use.
