Dude, it’s not like Austin is going to have dramatically different food than the rest of the country. Their BBQ isn’t that different than what you’ll find in most of the south (unless you’re some type of hard core foodie).
You sound like a fun person to be around

Interesting. I am from Austin and didn't know this. I'm not a sushi guy though

our VP (a cheapskate) noticed a “Cajun” restaurant and wanted to eat there
Never seen the appeal of eating at a cajun restaurant when in another state.

Austin has several high end sushi places

Mexican food in Texas is absolutely different than what I’m getting in Kentucky.
Same with brisket.

How dumb of your coworkers to not get in line at Franklin BBQ at 6 a.m. for lunch.
I'm sure the conference sessions are just suggestions for them to attend.

Usually a sign of lower intelligence. Just be glad they aren't taking up seats at the good local spots.

I went to India with a guy that just ate plain rice, chicken nuggets and Imodium the entire time.

Its why other countries hate Americans. We went with a group to Europe once, and several people wanted McDonald's for lunch.
I see it as a sign of ignorance and disrespect. There are exceptions like being allergic to seafood, or the situation that the Minneapolis mayor got himself into.
You should at least try something local everywhere you go.

I'm so culinarily adventurous, that I really want to travel to India and try the street food, knowing that it will give me explosive diarrhea

I have no desire to eat food I find unappealing. If that means I'm not adventurous, so be it.

Pretty sure this exchange debunks the ridiculous ‘Japanese food is primary in Texas notion.’
No disrespect to OP. But just no

as hard as i might try, i just can't make myself care what other people choose to eat

In Grad school, I never could afford the hotels where meetings were headquartered. I had a great travel agent who found good local hotels at a ffthe the price. (Never Indian (dot) owned. I'd aske the clerk where he or she would go for lunch. I was never mislead and I remember the restaurants in Halifax, Bristol UK, couple of cities in Spain, and Calgary. Taxi drivers back then were also good leads.

Don't do it man. One of my idiot co-workers did it and ended up in the hospital for a week on some gnarly antibiotics to kill whatever he got. It's not just a case of the shits. You're going to get that just from some residual shower water and ice so you'll get the Delhi belly experience regardless.
