The Soviets lost 1.1 million in that one battle, and still had bodies to throw at the Nazis all the way back to Berlin.

If pearl harbor hadn't happened when it did we'd all be speaking German.

Do you live in France or Poland? Germany couldn’t cross the English Channel, much less the Atlantic Ocean.

I've listened to it 4 or 5 times and each time there's some horrifying detail that I missed before.

Except invading Russia was kind of the whole point. Hitler saw it as a sort of Germany's Manifest Destiny, only he called it "Lebensraum". He wanted Germany to become as powerful as the US by expanding east just as the US expanded west.

His fatal mistake was the lack of patience. Clean up the Western Front (take or neutralize UK), stabilize your holdings in Africa...Take Egypt and you'll have all the oil you need.

Having accomplished those feats, you would have not only the advantage of technology but only be fighting on one front when you do invade the USSR.

Putin seems to be have learned this lesson. He is quietly taking lands and doing so in a slow enough succession that the dogs of war are not howling as badly.

Saw this in the thread title and was intrigued. Could it be some kind of sexy Stalingrad? Or just regular old depressing Stalingrad?

Alas, it’s the latter. That is a sobering photo though, what a brutal conflict.

Their war games correctly predicted the landing site to be Normandy. The Germans refused to believe that this was the actual landing site until July.

Calais made geographical sense and the allies staged wooden and blow up tanks and airplanes across the channel there. Landing in Normandy was just Great War strategy by the Allies, but the Germans still had enough garrisons along the entire coast to cut a lot of people to shreds.

Apparently everyone in Germany from Hitler down to the common foot soldier was hooked on a combination of Meth and Benzos.

It was Pervitin and came in a little roll like livesavers. That type of stuff was actually, if I recall correctly, available over the counter at close to the war. I think the Nazis amped the dose up for wartime and made it standard issue. If I remember right, they weren't alone in using stimulants as we did too of a different concoction.

I disagree, he dawdled too long.

He didn't really have a choice with France, so he got that over with the quickness. Once he had done that, he should have told Mussolini to frick off and handle Africa himself, and just used his U-boats on England and not wasted all that time and airpower on trying to get them to surrender.

The problem with delaying Barbarossa was that every day he delayed, Stalin got stronger. He should have timed the invasion of the USSR early in the Spring of '40 as the road conditions would allow.

But Hitler's main problem was that he should have put the German economy on a total war footing in 1939. In spite of all the bombing by the allies, Germany increased war materiel production every year of the war except 1945 (if I'm not mistaken). If he had prepared properly, he could've invaded France in September of 1939, and been done before Reformationstag. Then spent all of that winter preparing for an early Spring 1940 initiation of Barbarossa.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing...

I think in the end it wouldn’t have mattered. Russia would have won a war of attrition unless the Germans developed nuclear capabilities. The whermacht was slaughtering red army soldiers by the 10s of thousands and they would just truck more Ruski’s to the front.

In an alternate reality, for Germany to stand a chance at winning a drawn out war in Russia, they would have needed the Japanese fighting the red army on the other side of the country. Even then I think the odds were slim. Russia just had far more manufacturing manpower and material and were churning out tanks and aircraft at a rate that vastly exceeded Germany. It can’t be overstated how detrimental Pearl Harbor was for the German war effort though.

Just throwing this out there. If Hitler had of won at Stalingrad.. All traffic and supplies would have been stopped from going up the river to Moscow from the South.. It would have played a strategic part...

Was it winnable though? Or “holdable”. Russia had for all intents and purposes an infinite supply of manpower

That is horrific.

Not about Stalingrad, but the book With The Old Breed was recommended by a fellow poster about the battles in the Pacific at Peleliu and Okinawa. I’m about 3/4’s done with it. The book really brings to life the barbaric violence of the battles. Highly recommend.

Those of us that haven’t experienced combat should be extremely grateful. I think I’d probably die of fear before I got off the boat.
