Clickbait headlines, our shrinking attention spans, and their own errors are marching local newspapers straight to the grave.
But what is far scarier to me is so many of these dying papers only survive by signing on to leftist funding from the National Trust for Local News—trading independence for a lifeline from the biggest left-wing donors out there.
Donors include:
Knight Foundation Significant grants, including multi-million-dollar support for operations and expansions.
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Funded early acquisitions, such as a $750,000 grant for Colorado newspapers.
Gates Family Foundation Supported Colorado projects, including printing facilities.
The Colorado Trust Key backer for Colorado initiatives.
Bohemian Foundation Contributed to infrastructure like printing presses.
Open Society Foundations (associated with George Soros) Provided general support since 2019; reports indicate contributions helped fund the 2023 Maine newspaper acquisition (though OSF states grants were not earmarked for specific projects).
Democracy Fund Listed as a supporter.
Marguerite Casey Foundation Supported Georgia operations.

The shut down the City Paper as well on 12/31. A highly unprofitable business that is shuttering, not really surprising. I'm honestly surprised the PG lasted as long as it has. The writers were on a 3 year long strike as well, that certainly didn't help business. The Union winning their litigation was the fianl nail in the coffin.
I'm old enough to remember when Pittsburgh was a two paper town with the Pittsburgh Press and Post Gazette operating. The Press fell in the early 90s. The Press was actually a higher quality paper and a much larger paper than the PG. It was the second largest paper in the state only behind the Philly Inquirer. Their Teamsters union was much more aggressive with the Press and made operating the paper almost impossible. That should have been enough info that papers were a failing business model, reality is that papers have been sucking wind for nearly 40 years and the internet was always going to kill them in the end. The Tribune-Review is still operating in town, but with Richard Mellon Scaife being dead for over a decade, it's hard to say what their future direction will be.
Most of their quality writers have gone independent over the past decade, guys like Dejan Kovacevic with DK Sports have been impactful.
I wouldn't be surprised to see more papers fall, at this point its an archaic platform. My only question, is what happens to all their archives? I suppose libraries could take that on, maybe something like Pitt's library archives could assume those responsibilities.

The PG has been published in some form since 1786. It was the first publication west of the Allegheny Mountains.
Amazing but sad trivia.
Coincides with the 240-250 year shelf life of our nation.

Just a few months earlier, unionized Post-Gazette workers had returned to the newsroom following an acrimonious three-year strike... A lower court order requiring Block Communications to make changes to its health insurance coverage for union workers. This, apparently, was another trigger in the decision to shutter the Post-Gazette.
In the age of online news sources, how do newspaper workers believe they hold ANY leverage?

I saw that as well
Wonder what will happen to writers like Kaboly?
I also just found out last night that Block also owns the Butler Eagle, which is my family's hometown paper.
I've grown up in Atlanta and it was a two paper town all through my teenage years/early 20's. The Constitution in the morning and The Journal in the evening. 2001 they combined.

Yeah, so I guess no great loss -- except for in a case like this where our "history" and legacy of America is again being buried. You wonder if Pittsburgh Post-Gazette archives will also be buried and "lost" (like my own local town's newspaper past.)
The "news" has increasingly been skewed by Leftist and Globalists. It's been 30 years since I've seen any real "independent journalism from a newspaper. Big Media has always been owned and operated by Big Money to control narratives and opinion.

I could be wrong, but I thought Kaboly left the papers a while back. He was working for The Athletic, but I think left last year. I know he does some work for the Pat McAfee show now, but at what capacity, I'm not sure.

You may be right. I thought he was still.with the paper.
I know Pomp does some freelance work for them, also.

Unions keep putting in work with their restructuring deals which almost always ensure these companies stay solvent, right?

Not just print, journalism in general is on the verge of being extinct. It's been replaced by hired propaganda

Small world.
He's the Godfather of Pittsburgh sports media.
Still doing his show with Starkey on 93.7 and still the sports director at Ch.2
He's one of the best.
Next time you're up there, go check out the Apple Inn in Dormont, my cousin is a bartender there. Ask for Bill.
